I believe it originates from some old videogame, where in one mission/cutscene you are attending a military funeral and have to press "F" to pay respect. I think player character salutes when you press "F", I'm not sure.

Why do people care about saying F for famous people instead of focusing on real problems?

If a pet or person died, F is not respectful
If it is a joke like belugasubs snaky, then its fine

But saying F in a case of someone who ACTUALLY DIED is extremely wrong and rude.
