Glider Update 1 "Smol Prototype"

47.8k FlyingThings  4.8 years ago

Over the course of the past few weeks since i've made the announcement that i'll attempt to build a glider, i've been bashing together a smaller scale prototype.
.
Here's the progress to far :

Cursed Grab

Wobbly rudder

Struts to keep the rudder from wobbling

Cockpit time

Cockpit and tail section clamped together

And the most recent part that i got done

Wing mounts

I even added the skid

.
.
The wings will be done next week.
Now this looks looks a bit different from what i scibbled down here and i dont know how many changes will come. But i'll redo the plans after the prototype is done and flew a few times.
.
Welp, that's all i got for now
Cya

@FlyingThings Weird... well, shit happens... At least I able to continue my Ta 154 paper model, and design studies at home. I didn't use the school workshop much...

@MethaManAircraft i'm surprised that we're allowed to go there too, or well, we're being kind of forced for some reason. It's weird since this is the only workshop of the school that stayed open, every other got closed.
    Oh and that sucks

@FlyingThings I'm surprised you were allowed to stay! I had to leave mine...

@MethaManAircraft welllll i'm building my prototype in the wood workshop of the boarding school that i'm attending, and because of the current situation with the virus, the time that we are allowed to spend there got drastically shortened so i got about 3-4 hours a week to work on it

@FlyingThings Nice! I've drafted a model of my first wing to build out of card but have now learned so much since that it is not a good design for what I want. I'll still build it to find any surprises that I need to know about...
This should be the perfect time to build, unless you are short of materials, no?

@MethaManAircraft i've been barely able to work on the whole thing due to the current situation, what i can say tho is that i meanwhile redesigned it and a second prototype is on its way

I found this piece of software: klik
I'm currently designing my flying wing with it.

@MethaManAircraft the tail will keep its skeleton look at the moment, only the front will be covered, in case i decide to add something through the back

@Chancey21 forgot to mention but yeah indeed the bolts basically doubled the weight lmao

@Random40 of the full scale thing?
My guess is around 12 meters from wingtip to wingtip
Maybe 10 so i have less trouble of storing it somewhere

@Chancey21 the bolts are there so i can exchange wings easier
i plan to test different airfoils and wing sizes on this so they gotta be easily exchangeable

Everything looks good except, please do not use bolts to mount the wings, use glue like everything else. Those bolts will end up doubling the weight of the plane. Trust me, I know I’ve made gliders like this before
