Honestly, I love vtol, and the f-35 and av8 mk2 are the only American vtol fighters

And take of the wings and put a small rotator there and put the wings on the rotator . Tada you got a make-shift vtol
I think the reason is that VTOL aircraft are slower, heavier and more expensive than traditional fixed wing aircraft. Also helicopters are more suited to low-speed vtol applications.
Well the problem is America didn't build that many VTOL, even the Harrier is derived from the british (america shall feel guilty kicking british XD) and as far as my knowing the first operational self built VTOL is the JSF F-35B marine version
Well if you count the harrier ( some are operated by the US) then you got three. But I think you'll need to talk to lockheed Martin or boeing about that to get more vtol aircraft
