The QD-18 series wasnt super popular until Kettle ind. revealed plans for the QD18Y. nicknamed the "Water Watcher" by the world. water watcher was a very interesting plane. designed for WW IV, it had some pretty neat features. the most know however, was its ability to dive bomb into the water, like maybe a gannet. in order to accomplish this amazing feat of engineering though, it took a lot of testing, failures, expenses, and a lot of time. but why would it dive into the water? it would do this mostly as a maneuver to evade attacks, or for a quick bit of stealth. but then, what about intakes, and how would it get out of the water?

for the intakes, they would be demolished when they hit the water, and then again, intakes arent meant to intake water. ti prevent both of these results, the QD-18Y would enter "dive mode." this would retract the intakes into the plane, and slant the wings back. it will also turn off the engines, and cover them up.

now to get out of the water, it would activate "launch mode." this deploys 4 water propellers to shoot it out of the water. then with enough speed, the plane would activate the engines and be able to fly away. this has many advantages over taking off from the water, then under it. (no im not explaining them)
