SimplePlanes Explained

INSPIRED BY @QuitePossiblyMangled

SimplePlanes may be simple, but the world of aviation is very complex. This is SimplePlanes Explained: The Realism (and lack thereof) of SP Builds and Things to Know by a Person Part 1.

Gyroscopes are Overrated

This is a simple one. Why does everyone use gyros? If you can't balance a plane, people just stick a gyro onto the plane and problem solved. However, gyros restrict control by always centering the attitude of the plane. A conversation with @PapaKernels told me that people use gyros because they already put the wings "where [they] wanted to put it" or "where it looked nice." Wings need to be put in a place that makes the plane stable, and not where it looks nice. It looks even better to fly a stable plane.

Landing Gear

I still see many high-profile users use the very basic of landing gear, or even just default gear. Honestly, I think that the landing gear is still part of the plane, so we should also pay attention to it. You can put takeoff lights on the nose gear of your airliners, and put a telescoping gear shaft with suspension for the gear. Very few people do this, and I think we should just pay more attention to the structure that both figuratively and literally support our planes.

Placement of Ye Olde Engines

There is a reason why single engine planes almost never have the engine mounted on the vertical stabilizer irl, and multi engine planes also only very rarely have a majority of engines mounted above (except seaplanes of course). Yet in SP, some people do it, and others also have engines mounted on the top of the fuselage. I know that trijets have engine no.2 up there, but the other engines are usually below the wings. There are many reasons this is a bad idea, but 2 main ones are really important are are relevant in SP.
1. The high placement of the engines causes the thrust to create a pitch down torque. I know you can make an MCAS-like system, but who ever bothers? At least I do.
2. The heavy engines shift the center of mass above the lift, and because gravity is pulling on the CoM and lift is from the CoL, the plane wants to flip over and is somewhat unstable.
Don't do it kids.

That is it for this installment of SimplePlanes Explained. Thank you for reading. If you want to be tagged on future posts in this series, type "T" in the comments or follow. Thank you.

@FeiWu there's a mechanical phenomenon known as physics, the f-4 countered the problem with haveing it's engines below the COM by angling them downwards (I'm doing that for mine i'm makeing), you can do the opposite with them above, not that hard, but for easy ness yes i won't advise it

@JeskoGoesVROOM most of these problems can be fixed with trial and error.

i think the reason why people usually dont do custom landing gear is because the game's physicss is buggy as heck and often causes the LG to break, bend, or even creat a black hole out of nothing (i blame the rotators)

    1. I always have wings in the place where I like. but the plane is always stable.
      .
2.I certainly have detailed chassis, but yes, I am too simple.
      .
    2. always positioned the engines adequately.

@KnightOfRen Fox saying that a vote being a vote is not necessarily a legal vote is like saying my being a student pilot is invalid and unnecessary just because other people are too. Bruh, I’m just stating facts about my knowledge. I did not say I was the greatest person in the world lol

    @KnightOfRen
Originally, I named this post “... and Things to Know by a Student Pilot and Aviation Enthusiast”
    But:

Plenty of us on the site have been through flight training and virtually all of us are aerospace enthusiasts, just like you. Get off of your high horse, this is only a game.

    BRUH

I was only stating facts lol
So I changed it to “...by a Person”
    XD

This community is now a video gaming analogue of Fox News.
”The Democrats want EVERY vote to count, not just the LEGAL ones, but the ones from undocumented immigrants and dead people too.”

you should aim for the best you can, I don't go for looks much but focus mainly on flight characteristics.

Same lol, all my liveries are horrible. We should design planes with ease of flight at the utmost priority
