papakernels and his group of friends bring you an all new forum series, let's talk!

So today I bring to you the forum series, let's talk. Today is or first episode, and we will be talking about early flight.
Flight is one of the most important inventions and scientific principles that we could have ever come up with, and is one of the most important discovery in history. It has helped the world link up like it never was before. Travel that took months can take mere hours, traveling across the country took days, now it takes just a few hours to go from New York city, to LA, all of that is due to the science behind flight.
Next episode will be about such principles, we will take a dive into the properties at work, to make 3000+ pound machines take to the skies and sail to every place imaginable. So sit back get into your comfy chair and enjoy taking a stroll down the alley of time, to the early 1900s where we stop first at the wright brothers, with their 1903-1905 flyers.

Wright flyers

Wright 1903 flyer was the first, with the 1905 being the first practical design with 3 axis controls. 1903 has roll and yaw, 1905 had yaw, pitch and roll. The 1905 was the better than the predecessors of the 1903, and 1904, with better speed, three axis controls, and a longer flight time. These aircraft really were what got flight into the eyes of the public, and became less of a fantasy and more of a reality, to go out, fly with the birds, and really became on of the most important inventions in history. Most of us know the history so I wont go into it as much. 1903-1905

Next the blériot XI

The first to fly the English channel, and was the first to have the now typical engine in the front technique, and the classic tail dragger gear design. It was what secured blériot into the history books, and become a successful businessman with his aircraft company. The blériot XI also came in millitary versions, and were used in ww1. The crossing of the english channel totally revolutionized the world of flight, and it earned Louis blériot £1000 equivalent to £118,000 today. The blériot had its problems, as people bought the plane the wanted to go faster, stressing the airframe, and in turn the french army placing a ban on monoplane aircraft, as it was subjected to have wing failures at high speed. Blériot made changes, and eventually was able to fix the main issue by strengthening the upper bracing wires.

Sikorsky ll'ya muroments

The Igor sikorsky's ll'ya muroments was one of the first aircraft with duel controls for pilot and co pilot, as well as being the basis for biplane bombers and transport aircraft to follow. This aircraft was the first 4 engine aircraft in production, with around 60 built. This was full of luxury, with an insulated passenger cabin, wicker chairs, a salon, and the first airborne toilet. It was definitely a technicnalogical advancement, and one of the most important for future bomber, and passenger aircraft.

user responses

In the user responses I ask my team a question pertaining to the topic. First up is KangaKangaTheRoo!!
kangas question
Which of these do you think was most important in the line of aircraft development?
Kanga: I would say the Wright flyers were mostly known because of their following, and america's passion for their country to strive and do new things.
Blériot on the other hand didn't have as much of a following, but he pursued his dream of flying, going to feats no one could dream of following at the time
Sikorsky on the other hand was inspired by these events and decided to pursue aviation.
He was the Wright brothers for helicopters in my opinion, but that's for another episode ;)
Of course Sikorsky pursued choppers instead but he did have some bold, early designs for aircraft.
I would have to say the Wright brothers are the most important because they are the main reason why America is so big on aviation, because of their passion being backed by the public, and the public backing their passion.
Man that was a book, but it sums it up nicely, next up is cyan!
Cyans question
What do you know of as the first aircraft in the world? Do you think it was truly the first aircraft in the world or do you think there were more than that were before it?

Cyan: Definitely the Wright Bros. because i define aircraft as a flying vehicle thats heaver than air, even if it was remote controlled it was still an aircraft, i think it was the true first aircraft in the world.

Finally Wiimini
his question
I'm not sure actually. I'm sure that the Wrights were most likely the first in America to do so, at least I'm not sure, but I believe they became famous due to it, causing history to be almost rewritten as the Wrights barnstormed the US and Europe with their craft.

thanks for reading, stay tuned next week for or talk on flight principles and the science behind flight!
