As the title explained, this could add a further sense of realism when applying guns and cannons to your craft. How this could be implemented is magazines that are connected to associated weapons the same way engines are to wheels.
How this would prevent older creations from being obsolete is that the magazine only acts as an ammo limiter and weight for realism, and everything remains the same as it once was on aircraft without magazines.
Rather than setting the ammo count for the individual weapon in its own settings, the ammo count could be determined via the magazine’s settings.
As the title says, the magazine as weight the more ammo is carried. For cannons, the size would increase with caliber though only the weight changes when more ammo is added although being multiplied by the caliber.
Multiple magazine types could be added with 4 in mind, being for cannons and machine guns respectively having both a fuselage and wing variant, the namesake being what part the magazine is added to. Maybe even more could be added for the sake of customizing the shape of the magazine.
So basically it’s a realism touch that is completely optional to add for anyone who wants to make combat aircraft performance to be as believable as possible.
I wasn’t ever thinking of the magazines being detachable unless via a detacher like any other part. They’d essentially be fuel tanks but for guns. @Bellcat
