Who or whether they are, is unknown, and it seems to be drawing a close, for now.
All we know about the spiders, is that they fly around, landing at airports, and just generally being a nuisance. Apparently one had rocket pods and a minigun, probably tired of it's younger spiders being shot down by planes.
If you see one, just ignore it.
