20th July 1953 the Korean War is almost over, troops are headed for home to the USA. I was stationed at Kimpo Airfield one of the many K Bases in South Korea.
My name is John Boyd it was my day off on the 20th July 1953 what happened on this day no one was prepared for. A North Korean pilot had requested to take his Mig 15 for a test flight and his request was granted, in actual fact he was defecting to the south. I've seen the Mig 15 in a dogfight but never up close. This Mig pilot did something that only the gutsy would do, as this would get any north korean killed who were attempting to defect to the south. The Jet landed at 12 noon we knew he had to of flown low as our radars never detected him till he shot up 1500 feet about 2 miles from the runway and configured for landing. When he showed up on radar it was too late to send F86 Sabers to intercept so our plan was get Jeeps to the runway with armed guards and meet the North Korean. The jet landed and the north korean was held as a POW for a few days till he had proven that he was detecting. The USAF and the U.S government didn't know what to do with the Mig. I was selected to test fly the jet about 4 days after its unannounced arrival. After collecting data from the Mig the U.S decided to match the russian Migs and build our own version of the Mig, the program was named AMMiG (American Made MiG) the first three letters being Uig. The program started at the end of the korean war with the first Uig produced, it a was highly advanced plane for its time with a fairly simple cockpit the U.S stuck with the F-4 Phantom as it's capability of being a multirole fighter this hopefully this would change over time. Note This story is fictional. Kimpo Airfield was a real Airbase listed as K-14. John Boyd was a USAF fighter pilot flying 22 missions instead of 100 he never shot his guns during the korean war he was a vice commander in Vietnam to taskforce alpha and was in Command of the 56th Combat support group Top Gun student and Instructor he also was nicknamed 40 second Boyd as he could take out an opponent in less then 40 seconds in a dogfight situation when placed at the start in a position of a disadvantage.
