Place it Symmetrically, Up/Down, Left/Right, Front/Back, People use brakes to turn their planes too so.. you can put one on the top and assign it to pitch, etc
If they're causing your plane to change direction, try to make sure that you use airbrakes in symmetric pairs. After all, they're basically just giant control surfaces. I made a divebomber a while back that has airbrakes on the training edge of the wings, something like that might work for you. It's called the de Havilland-Fairey Dragonet, I think
