I Have A Complaint About Dogfights In This Game

20 Blb1981  1.7 years ago

So I usually like to watch DCS videos on dogfights (especially Su-57 ones). I also play Strike Fighters 2 and Falcon 4.0: Allied Force and I tried using lots of mods to replicate the dogfights that are on YouTube with DCS. I downloaded this game on January 7th (I think) 2023 and I created my account yesterday. And recently I figured out that when you spawned airplanes in sandbox mode, you could actually start fights with them. And I had an issue with the fact that in dogfight mode, you can only fight one plane.

Alright the real complaint is:

I don’t even know where to begin about the AIs in this game

First of all, they go all over the place acting like they’re beyond not knowing how to fly and they don’t maneuver around any terrain and just go: “Woah! Look at this terrain- AHHHHH- Boom

And then a while back ago, I was doing a dogfight in a MiG-21 against an F-22 and I got hit with its guns like a decillion times and I can still fly

Like, come on! This plane’s a few pieces of metal put together and then you’ve got this superplane that realistically could rip me in half! (No offensive to Russia)

Oh yeah, did I mention the F-22 couldn’t even use it’s stupid weapon bays or thrust vectoring!? That literally makes the F-22 look like a WWI plane

Basically, this is just me suggesting to SimplePlanes that they improve they’re AI (a lot) and expand more on their combat section (such as a mission creator that’s very easy to use and has a wide variety of features or just tons of missions and fun stuff to do for players like me who not only downloaded the game to build they’re own aircraft, but for those who also got this game for the combat stuff too)

Also, I’m not sure if the world would still be here if I ran DCS on my current desktop lollololololol

@PlaneFlightX i was going to say that, but then I remembered that SP was kinda made for combat flights since they have the weapons, missions and AI.
But yeah, the game's main purpose is still plane-building.

My opinion on all this? SP is a game for building and flying planes, not a combat simulator.

Yeah, the AI in SimplePlanes is absolutely trash and is very basic, and people have been asking for an update for several years now. Hopefully they do a really good one day. Hopefully this year 🙏

The WWII dogfight mission is the easiest challenge in the while of SP. All you have to do is fly your plane in a straight line and the two opponents will immediately have a mid-air collision with each other. Yey :)

    But still
Its a game about building planes
Its not suppose to be like DCS World
You probably downloaded an unrealistic MIG-21 lmao

@ollielebananiaCFSP I think he meant the AI cant interact with the activation codes

@Numbers2 @Blb1981 Oh, I fully agree that SimplePlanes' AI needs an update (or even a complete overhaul). It's such an outdated system that I'm surprised it works as well as it does. (For example, the AI still doesn't know how to fly helicopters even though dedicated rotor parts have been in-game for... how long now?)

    That’s very interesting HuskyDynamics

Yeah, I may have not realized that the F-22’s AI probably didn’t know that it could use its thrust vectoring or weapon bays

And no I don’t think that it was the creator of the F-22s fault that it couldn’t use neither of those things AG1 was the thrust vectoring and I’m pretty sure that AG3 was the weapon bays

It probably did sound like to some that I was complaining about the creator of the F-22 but I wasn’t but rather complaining- no I wasn’t really complaining about that that part in particular it was more or I thought it was slightly annoying and it doesn’t really need to be in this post

I also did not know that the builder of the plane could set a choice of health so please forgive me that is my mistake

The whole point is saying that was that I wish that SimplePlanes could improve the AI to program them so that they could (I know nothing about prgramming bare with me) know what they do

Really this post was pointless because SP probably won’t actually upgrade the AI anyway

@RepublicOfCursedPlanes @HuskyDynamics01 Well AI is needing new update its over due for one, especially in free flight. Why you ask? Well its because you have the 1 plane split.

Honestly it's somewhat of a miracle that the AI functions as smoothly as it does, given the huge variations between different player-built aircraft. With regards to the F-22, the AI didn't use the thrust vectoring simply because it didn't know it could. The AI is limited to the basic flight controls plus weapons, and will try to keep itself away from what it thinks is a stall whenever possible. This means that it will never intentionally perform post-stall maneuvers. Similar thing for activation groups and the VTOL and Trim sliders. The AI never uses them because it just doesn't know what they do, and therefore can't know when to use them.

It is theoretically possible to build a plane that would "trick" the AI into performing some semblance of post-stall maneuvers, but it would undoubtedly be very tricky and I don't think anyone's tried it.

Tl;dr the AI was only designed to fly basic aircraft, and doesn't know how to take full advantage of more advanced designs (and therefore loses control of them somewhat often, leading to unplanned kinetic disassembly).

Regarding the "hit with its guns like a decillion times and I can still fly", that's just a discrepancy between the gun damage and the part health, both of which are set by the players who built the planes. Either the health-to-damage ratio was just off, or you just didn't get hit anywhere vital, neither of which are related to the AI.

I have to admit, it's kind of funny to go head on with the enemy (play chicken) and have us both crash into each other.

"Oh yeah, did I mention the F-22 couldn’t even use it’s stupid weapon bays or thrust vectoring!? That literally makes the F-22 look like a WWI plane" What's the point of saying this ? It as nothing to do with the game, just a badly build F-22, a player creation nothing more

Oh, yes, everything here is 100% correct. I play War Thunder, I'm actually working on my pilot's license irl, and I also have had enough experience researching air forces and dogfights that this is extraordinarily outdated
    .
My biggest peev is that these missiles in movies and games can "home" on targets. Yes, missiles can maybe go like 5 or 10 degrees by the time they hit, but missiles do not aim for the target, they aim ahead of it, or behind it, for radar and infrared, respectively, and beyond that, they travel mach 5-10, in the time you can say "smoke in the air" from 5 miles away, you have already been hit and are either dead if it hits your radar, or knocked unconscious/pulling the ejection handle if it hits your engines, while also in a flatspin
    .
This game can't really be redone in its state, they have to make a new game from the ground up to fix it, but hey, its a simple CAD, so you gotta give it some credit lol
