Relations have seen a deterioration in negotiations over the Eel War, so in the event that fighting resumes I may want to seek more allies and arms.
That's where you people might come in.
Problem is, I don't know how to organize a challenge.
There are plenty of ways to do challenges.
Some are simple, some are elaborate. The most simple would be, I believe, winners by upvotes (which is a horrible, horrible system as it favours higher ranking players). The most complex I know of is Wars, which are so incredibly complicated that I honestly have no idea how they work. I just see the wall of text and just move on. Not worth reading, I wouldn't understand it anyways.
I'd have my eye on a sort of "stay within constraints" type deal. Essentially, I have a limited "budget" and I need to chose things that are cheap to buy/maintain. Cost would be calculated by part count/performance cost/payload carried, which would be required to be added up by the participant to be qualified for scoring. I'd chose best fit as winner. Of course, disqualifying over-the-top things that aren't remotely physically possible (Mach 5 overload fighter with one (1) small jet engine), and favouring certain styles (i.e. makeshift craft), but that's beside the point.
What kind of labour would this require? How much monitoring? I don't have much spare time, so I don't know if I'd be able to keep up and test things, assuming anyone would contribute.
This is all theoretical, of course, and is by no means guaranteed to actually happen.
Another issue is actually being notified.
The standard method is successors, but frankly those come off as scummy. Yes, useless internet points, but it'd feel unearned and dishonest to (potentially) earn hundreds of points by doing basically nothing.
RandomPlayer, great guy, but soooooooooo bourgeoisie from the Block Challenge. It certainly brought out a lot of neat things from the community, but adding over 5,000 points to my count really isn't my style. I'm not faulting them for it or anything, but for me it'd just feel wrong to do that. (Yes, I know that anything I could make wouldn't get that successful, you know what I mean).
Would (hyper)links in comments be practical? Has anyone done that before? Does it work?
Successors puts everything on one page, and is sorted by upvotes, which isn't how I'd score things but it helps sort out the best of the best to focus my attention on.
Comment links wouldn't really do that, even if I told people to upvote comments linking to good craft.
Basically, how hard is making a challenge?
@Randomplayer "And all beheld the words embossed theron in great timidity"
@Graingy toilet
@Randomplayer So where do you want your head?
Above a mantle or in a toilet?
@Graingy :(
@Randomplayer You're my favourite bourgeoisie.
I'll make sure the guillotine is well-padded so it's comfy.
:)
Ok wait I just read the last part, at least I’m not milking challenges ever month
@Noname918181 Yeah I don't got discord lmao this is it.
I thought as much. Make a forum at the same time as the post itself.
Posts are more visible, but stay up front for less time.
The question remains whether I even have the time for all of this, but I guess that's for me to figure out lol
@Graingy discord servers are my go to way, of course, you should not spam your challenge, but that should be obvious. You can also add a link on your profile page
Another way is to make forums about the challenge, but I don't really do that as it may get a little spammy
Another way is to upload the challenge when you think the most people are active, but that is difficult to predict and may just be random chance
@Senkopilot Sounds like something a serious person would say
@Noname918181 Good advice.
And yeah, forgot about advertising.
How would you even do that?
Best I can think of would be a fancy edited thumbnail and a forum post.
@Senkopilot
No Bob
Also also also, you can judge the entry as soon as they get entered into the challenge, this makes getting the challenge results easier than if you were to judge them all at the same time
Once you judged that entry you can enter it's scores and your thoughts on a notepad or a word document for easy access
From my very limited experience, you just need a rating system and some rules, once you got those sorted out it's pretty much smooth sailing from there
.
Of course, judging entries will be time consuming, but that's just natural, besides, if you do it properly you can have fun while doing it aswell
I do recommend getting a second judge if there are a lot of entries or if you can't run some of the entries due to performance issues
.
Almost forgot to mention, all of this is for naught if the challenge doesn't get attention, so do whatever you can(that abides by the site rules) to attract attention to your challenge. From my experience this is the most difficult part of making a challenge
@Senkopilot I would bonk you but I'm a lil busy at the moment.
Could you bash your skull in yourself?
@5 This is literally my only social media, not counting a YouTube exclusively used for commenting.
WCU?
@Crums brehh this is how I did my challenge the only time I made one 3 years ago
Do a wcu and organize it on discord
@Mousewithamachinegun123 You are the apostle of Bob
@Graingy
Ok, I probably will then, I just thought you should, cause it is yours.
@Mousewithamachinegun123 You can do that.
@Randomplayer no
Bob challenge.
skippy toilet amogus ohio
@Crums How else would I find the best?
This would be styled as military procurement, after all.
@Crums Yeah, I know, that's what I want to avoid.
