Episode 13: The Japanese High-Tech Fighter Squadron

The next morning, around 10am, Eiko, Masayoshi and a crew board the RF Samara battlecruiser. The RSNF also borrowed a Mi-26 from Gensokyo and replaced it with 1 of the 4 KA-52 onboard the Samara. After preparation is finished, the ship set sail out to the open sea, then it turns to North and starts making its way to Russia. Thanks to Sakura, the Samara is able to know exactly where president Yamamoto is locked. However, no one know how his “prison” looks like, it can be a normal prison or a complete military base, no one want to risk losing any unit, especially during this time of the war. After the Samara has disappeared from Gensokyo, what’s left is waiting. However, it won’t just simply waiting…

The next day, 4pm.

Victor: “Attention! Gensokyo attention! Multiple hostile aircrafts spotted on the radar, more than 50 of them! I repeat! More than 50 enemy planes are coming to Gensokyo!”

A massive group consists of 11 fighter squadrons and 10 strategic bombers can be seen flying towards Gensokyo. One of the bomber is the new stealth supersonic strategic bomber of Japan, the SDB-1, a tailless Y shaped bomber, the rest are B-52Js. One of the squadrons is one that Squadron X has encountered before, the HTFS (High-Tech Fighter Squadron) consists of 5 ATD-Xs, the leading pilot is male, the rest are females.

The Gensokyo Guardians squadron, Squadron X and two more squadrons from the Shtorm quickly scramble to takeoff and fight with the enemies. But while everyone is scrambling, something else also happens at the same time…

???: “You guys takeoff first, I’ll follow after.”

From one of Gensokyo’s forests, a swarm of doll can be see flying up from the trees. Then they suddenly glow white, then they turn into glowing particles, the particles then reform into much bigger shapes and eventually, the glow disappears and what’s left are UCAVs. The dolls have turned into combat drones. There’re two leading drones, both take the form of a stealth drone with arrow wings and canards, they carry laser guns and homing missiles, one is painted in dark blue, white and red, the other is dark red and red, (Shanghai is blue and Hourai is red); the rest of them are flying wings with white top and dark blue belly with a laser mounted on top. After all the drones have taken off, a mysterious stealth fighter jet with 3 engines, arrow wings, canards and 4 tails painted in dark blue, white, yellow and red takeoffs from the forest and follows the drones.

Victor: “54 planes versus 18, losses are unavoidable at this point.”

Sanae: “Both satellites are deactivated, we don’t have anything to aid us anymore.”

Sokolóv: “They definitely knew that one of their people is here with us.”
…
Victor: “Everyone, attention! A bunch of unknown signals are spotted on the radar! My God that’s a lot of signals!!”

Sokolóv: “How many?! Where are they?!”

Victor: “Uhm… 140 signals! They’re drones, coming from behind you! One of them is massive!!”

Reimu: “Behind us?!”

Everyone turns around and see a massive group of drones with a massive flying wing that has a wingspan of approximately 1 kilometer behind them on the burning sunset.

???: “Everyone, return to base, I can take them on my own.”

Marisa: “That voice…”

Marisa and Reimu: “Alice?!”

Alice Margatroid: “I repeat, all aircrafts, return to base.”

Victor: “Well, you hear her, all aircrafts, withdraw and retreat.”

Japan side

ATD-X 01 pilot: “What in the world am I looking at…”

ATD-X 03 pilot: “Kai… I suddenly lost the will to fight…”

Kai (ATD-X 01 pilot): “Well, me too, Emi. That thing is not small. Asuka, what about you?”

Asuka (ATD-X 02): “I’m shaking right now.”

Kai: “Alright… Ayamy?”

Ayamy (ATD-X 04): “I don’t want to fight either.”

Kai: “Hana?”

Hana (ATD-X 05): “N-No.”

Kai: “Alright girls, let’s fall behind, let everyone fight first.”

Asuka, Ayamy, Emi and Hana: “Roger.”

Back to Gensokyo side, after everyone breaks away and turn around to go back to base, Alice’s drones immediately throttle up and fly straight at the enemies. When they’re near the enemies, Shanghai and Hourai still flies straight, but the other drones all spread out, then they turn back a the enemies, all of them fly in a way that when they fire their laser, a massive laser net is created, burning any enemy that flies through it.

Kai: “Oh fuck!!! Everyone, turn around and retreat!!!”

The HTFS retreats from the battlefield and returns to Japan.

After a few planes are destroyed, all 136 drones separate from the formation and start chasing the enemies while still keeping their lasers on. Alice also joins when all her drones begin to chase the enemy planes. The sky has already became a mess of bullet, missiles, laser and fire in such a short time. All enemy bombers are shot down easily and quickly, including the SDB-1. The whole group of drones also covers the enemies, preventing them from escaping, it’s like being attacked by a whole hornet nest, but instead of hornets, they’re deadly combat drones. During the dogfight, the giant drone, also known as Goliath or Goliath Doll/Drone occasionally launches up to 30 air to air missiles, causing a lot of warnings to go off on the enemy planes, causing them to panic, some pop their flares, others run straight at the drone’s lasers to their death. In just 5 minutes, the battle is already over. Only the HTFS survived due to them retreated early. Everyone in SAAC also witnessed the entire fight and was amazed, the beautiful yet quiet puppeteer of Gensokyo has done something no one ever thought she could do.

After the battle, Alice went to SAAC airport to get some rest and chat with her fellow friends. As it turns out, she felt that something was not right, she felt like Gensokyo is on the losing side so she decides to go to battle after 3 years of secretly upgrading her plane and her dolls. After 6pm, she returns back to her home and continues her day as usual.

In Japan, the HTFS is scolded for their cowardly behavior and is ashamed by the other people in the base, no one knew that they could’ve died if they didn’t get out of there fast enough, but well, it’s Japan. They went back to their room and no one is feeling well, they can only cuddle each other to make themselves feel better. At around 8pm, Akio suddenly messages Kai and ask if he would like to join Kaga’s patrol mission next morning. After a while of thinking, he asks his mates about it, they all agree. Then he replies yes to Akio. Akio then asks the Admiral to message with the Air Force and borrow the HTFS, he agrees.

The next day, at 12, the HTFS receives an order to join the patrol mission with Kaga. After Kaga has sailed out to the sea, the air force base tells the HTFS that they’re clear for takeoff, they left the base and start flying to the Kaga. Since Kaga only has 4 arresting wires, the number 05 has to circle around a bit before she can land. After all 5 planes have landed, the pilots gets out of their planes. The number 01 pilot is Kai, a 25 years old Japanese boy, he’s quite tall, around 175 cm with black hair and brown eyes, he joined the air force about 5 years ago. The number 02 is Asuka, she’s a 24 years old, tomboy Japanese girl with a unique pair of red eyes, she’s 170cm tall, she has been in the air force for 3 years. Number 03 is Emi, a not so tall girl with short hair and slightly yellow eyes, she’s 150cm tall, she’s the youngest member of the squadron and is considered cute by the others, she has joined the air force for only 2 years, from when she graduated from high school. Number 04 is Ayamy, she’s around 160cm, has black hair that she usually like to tie up into a ponytail, for some unknown reason, part of her hair is silver, she joined the air force 3 years ago and she’s around 23. And lastly is the number 05, Hana, she’s the newest member of the squadron, she’s 24 years old and joined the air force 3 years ago, she’s around 173cm tall, has black short hair and very dark red eyes. After they’ve gotten out of their planes, the HTFS goes to greet Akio.

Akio: “Hey guys! Heard you had a bad yesterday! How you feeling?”

Kai: “We feel a bit better now Akio.”

Akio: “That’s good to hear. Come on in, I have candies in the control room.”

Kai: “Okay, let’s go girls.”

In the control room.

Kai: “By the way, where’s Eiko? I usually see him with you.”

Akio: “Oh, he’s… how should I say it… rescuing the president?”

Everyone of the HTFS widen their eyes in surprise.

Kai: “What?”

Akio: “Yeah… only him has that picture, but in short, president Yamamoto is locked somewhere in Russia, he and the people who we called enemies are on their way to rescue him and hopefully, stop this war.”

Emi: “Sound like something straight out of an anime.”

Akio: “Of course, such thing is hard to believe. But… you guys know Sakura?”

Asuka: “Sakura… the navy ship manager right?”

Akio: “Correct, she escaped Japan on the Basilisk and is now on Gensokyo and Russia side. She gave them the informations they needed.”

Emi: “How did she escape?”

Akio: “I don’t know, but what I do know is the Basilisk was sunken.”

Emi: “A ship that powerful was sunken?”

Akio: “No one know what’s powerful, what’s not, only in real battle that we can see their capabilities.”

Kai: “I see… so Eiko is with the enemies now?”

Akio: “Yeah.”

Kai: “If chief commander finds out about this, it won’t be good for you, you guys are literally working with our enemies.”

Akio: “No one is enemy, Kai, you should know that. In war, everyone are comrades, they fight for the same objective, what matters is which side they’re on.”

Emi: “Hmm, you’re not wrong.”

Akio: “By the way, this whole operation is kept secret, they’ve known where he’s locked at so this would be over before our side can find out.”

Kai: “Alright.”

4 hours later.

Sailor: “Captain, 5 enemy signal spotted. There’s also a radio connection request too.”

Akio: “Accept the request.”
…
Sokolóv: “Hello?”

Akio: “This is carrier Kaga listening.”

Sokolóv: “This is Sokolóv and Squadron X, we’re here to check you guys a bit.”

Akio: “Okay, feel free.”

Emi: “Sokolóv… Squadron X… the legendary Snow Demon pilot and his squadron?!”

Sokolóv: “Oh? Whose cute voice was that? Oh and, those planes on your deck… I’ve seen them before, we fought each other in Japan when the Basilisk was released.”

Kai: “Those drones were you guys?!”

Sokolóv: “Yup.”

Emi: “We fought with a legendary squadron that day?! What an honor!”

The Squadron X pilots chuckle at Emi’s hyperactive energy.

Roza: “Okay, can you introduce yourselves?”

Kai: “My name is Kai, I’m the number 01, the leader of the Japanese High-Tech Fighter Squadron.”

Asuka: “I’m Asuka, pilot number 02 of the squadron.”

Emi: “My name’s Emi, I’m number 03.”

Ayamy: “I’m Ayamy, number 04.”

Hana: “I’m Hana, number 05.”

Sokolóv: “Alright, allow us to introduce ourselves too. My name is Sokolóv, known as Snow Demon, pilot of the Sukhoi T-60 and the lead pilot of the Russian experimental fighter squadron, the Squadron X.”

Volkóv: “My name is Volkóv, pilot of the SU-60SMX, I’m next to Sokolóv on the right.”

Roza: “My name is Roza, pilot of the SU-57X, I’m flying next to Volkóv.”

Orlóv: “I’m Orlóv, pilot of the SU-47 model S-47, I’m next to Sokolóv on the left.”

Terminator: “I’m Terminator, pilot of the SU-37, I’m next to Orlóv.”

Emi: “They’re so cool… wish I could be like them.”

Kai: “Hehe, you will one day.”

Sokolóv: “By the way… lead pilot, Kai, right?”

Kai: “Yes?”

Sokolóv: “Your fighting style that time was… interesting to say the least, so, I want to challenge you to a dogfight!”

Kai: “W-What?”

Sokolóv: “It’s alright, just a chase, no weapon.”

Kai looks at his teammates and Akio, all of them encourage Kai to accept the challenge.

Kai: “Okay, I accept.”

In just a few minutes, Kai finished preparing and the his ATD-X is catapulted off the Kaga. Squadron X separates from Sokolóv and flies far away.

The two planes fly straight at each other head-on on the orange sunset, it looks like an old Western standoff but with planes. When the distance between two planes is short enough, Sokolóv suddenly engages in a barrel roll, 1 loop, 2 loop, then he aims down and fly straight at Kai. Kai is surprised by Sokolóv suddenly flies straight at him, he pitches up out of the way.

Sokolóv: “Alright, try to stay behind me.”

Kai heard that and he starts chasing Sokolóv. However, as soon as he’s on Sokolóv’s tail, Sokolóv brakes and rolls at the same time, their positions are switched. Kai then does a cobra and switches position with Sokolóv. Both pilots are now caught on with the heat of a dogfight, they increase their throttle and start chasing each other. Sokolóv turns right, Kai follows after. While turning, Sokolóv applies his brakes and switches position. Kai then starts barrel rolling, Sokolóv also does the same, both planes circling in a spiral with each other. While spinning, Kai lowers his throttle and at one point, has Sokolóv in his gunsight. Then, Sokolóv continue to stay in front of Kai, then engages in a turn again, Kai continues to follow him. He then suddenly does a backflip mid turn and switches position. Both planes continue to have a beautiful dance in the sky, giving Squadron X and everyone on the Kaga a spectacular air show. After a while, Sokolóv gets Kai in his gunsight for the last time, he then opens radio and speak with him.

Sokolóv: “Alright, that’s enough.”

Kai: “Woah, you are really something. You didn’t even try, did you?”

Sokolóv: “What? No, you actually gave me a good fight.”

Kai: “What?!”

Everyone on the Kaga also surprised by what he said.

Sokolóv: “I’m quite old and has fought a lot of opponents over the years. Aside from Shinigami and some other ace pilots, I actually had to put some effort into the dogfight with you.”

Kai: “So, you’re saying that I’m good?”

Sokolóv: “Yes, however, I found out something strange while fighting with you. You wanna know?”

Kai: “Yes, what is it?”

Sokolóv: “Your fighting style is really good and extremely deadly with aircrafts that have canards, like the Typhoon, Rafale or the J-26. You made quite a few mistakes while fighting, all those mistakes can be fixed just by changing the plane. But I heard that Japan doesn’t have any canards plane so I find that weird.”

Kai: “Actually, there’s one experimental plane with canards, its name is J14W.”

Sokolóv: “J14W?”

Kai: “Yes, an experimental fighter jet that’s based on the J7W2 of the Imperial Japanese air force. I was the test pilot for it for a whole year before being assigned for the HTFS. I developed my fighting style thanks to that plane, This squadron was created only more than a year ago so I still haven’t get used to my current plane yet. The J14W project is still currently on hold and I don’t know if I will ever see it again.”

Sokolóv: “I see, still, despite having an unfamiliar plane, you fought an experimental super plane very well.”

Kai: “Thank you.”

Sokolóv: “We’re almost out of fuel now, we need to return. Well, so long, may we meet again.”

Kai: “See you again Snow Demon.”

Squadron X turns around and return to Gensokyo, Kai landed back on the Kaga.

Emi: “I didn’t know you are that good chief.”

Ayamy: “Yeah, you really surprised us.”

Kai: “Well, if I fight with you guys, I have to look after you guys at the same time, so I don’t put all my effort into fighting. But if I fight alone, I’m able to fight more viciously because I only need to care about myself and my opponents.”

Emi: “So it’s because of us that you can’t fight to you best?”

Kai: “N-No I didn’t mean that.”

Akio: chuckles “Alright, patrol mission finished. Let’s return, I also need to send a message back to base.”

3 days later…

Samara’s captain: “Alright everyone, we’re nearly there, get ready.”

Masayoshi: “We’re coming to save you, old friend.”

Eiko: “God, it’s cold here.”
