I heard somewhere (not very credible, I know), that supposedly the Soviets didn't say much, the US freaked, and then the USSR kinda rolled with it... right into the US having the F-15.
Is that true?

@Graingy Oh yeah, the 31 definitely didn't come out "on top", but it did take off and get within visual range (plus a radar lock) of the SR-71, which does qualify as an intercept. Also, the response was equivalent in a sense. We built something to beat what they said they had. The fact that what they had turned out to be less than what they said was unfortunate for them.
@HuskyDynamics01 That sounds less like an intercept and more like an attempted intercept? Though I do not know the capabilities of the missile, the article said it was unlikely it would have succeeded if fired.
Just to be clear, I'm not a blackbird nut. Cool aircraft, totally, but I just don't see how the MiG-25/31 comes out on top here?
Also the actual quality of the Foxbat is pretty disconnected from the US response in building the F-15. That was an intelligence failure rather than a proper equivalent response.
