Good ways to compare fighters?

35.8k Graingy  4 months ago

If I have two fighter jets, what are some good ways to compare and contrast their air-to-air performance without needing pages of statistics and graphs?

Dogfights don’t work well as the AI is stupid and may not know how to use features such as flaps or afterburners.

Races are the same - some planes can’t even take some corners without crashing because the AI doesn’t know how to fly beyond a literal point-to-point path.

Any suggestions?

    @TheUltimatePlaneLover See my recent forum about speed. A couple of jets linked there if you want to try them out.

    Of course I do!

    @Graingy Ah that makes sense
    In that case... I dunno
    You could let me fly them and I'll analyse them

    @TheUltimatePlaneLover I know, but that’s ways off and might possibly have a different physics engine.

    At least I’d hope it does (as an option, of course).

    @Graingy No not in SP with mods, SP2, they said it's supposed to have multiplayer

    @TheUltimatePlaneLover eh, idk.
    I know that actually setting up a server is difficult (and possibly insecure, since I believe you need to share your IP address). Idk about joining one.

    @OrangeConnor2 No no, you have a point.

    @Graingy Hmmm true, in that case my only bet is wait until SP2 so you can fight multiplayer

    @Randomplayer There are several issues with that.
    Technical, security concerns, actually finding someone to fight, etc.

    @TheUltimatePlaneLover But the SP AI often just comes down to endless turns or whoever has more flares. It is mind-bogglingly stupid. There isn't really much to gather from them.

    @Dracul0Anderson That would require a lot of measurements.
    I tried to measure top speeds of some of my aircraft recently before getting a reply for my issue. Keeping a stable altitude was basically impossible, so the altitudes weren't the same.
    Also depends whether you consider the payload to be part of the aircraft.

    @KPLBall No two replicas are the same, nor necessarily accurate.
    Playstyle is relevant, but also comes down to representing piloting technique as an actual aircraft would. Different planes are meant to be flown differently.

    Fly them yourself, take footage, have them fight something simple that the AI is good with, and compare results.

    @Dracul0Anderson that's a good idea for me I'll try it on my planes

    Perhaps create a chart of general combat and flight characteristics that can apply to all aircraft, with different levels to denote how good or bad a certain trait can be, similar to the Marvel Power Grid.

    @Randomplayer no because if he does multiplayer no one has the exact same play style has him
    @Graingy
    Look at their aspects (Like seeing who can go faster in a straight line, who has better missiles, who can turn tighter, Ect.) then in dogfight mode try using against a F-15 or F-16 to see which fairs better
