The H-5 aircraft is the first domestically produced light tactical bomber in China, achieving a successful transition from propeller to jet type bombers. The H-5 light tactical bomber is a replica of the Il-28 (IL-28) jet bomber introduced by China from the Soviet Union. The aircraft was equipped with two turbojet engines and a flat wing design, making it a highly advanced frontline bomber at the time.
The development of H-5 began in January 1963, and the first H-5 successfully flew in Harbin on September 25, 1966. In April 1967, the H-5 bomber passed national certification and was put into mass production before being equipped with the Chinese Air Force. The machine was discontinued in 1984. The H-5 fighter jets were all retired from the active service of the Chinese Air Force in May 2009.
