Graingy PSA: Stop Stealing our Rails.

48.3k Graingy  1.1 years ago

Some mf, couldn’t tell you who, keeps stealing sections of track from the old Vancouver-Yukon rail line we operated back in the 1940s and 50s. We scarcely use it anymore, largely since the old headquarters is basically just ruins by now, but it’s still Graingy property on Graingy land.

When we find you, you are dead.

    @Boeing727200F And yet you somehow didn't notice the operating machinery, which is never quiet.

    @Graingy the thing is there is a blind curve leading up to the area leading up to our property line. We were not able to see the missing track till we were 10 feet away.

    @Boeing727200F You know, I hear there's this cutting-edge technology called "eyes".
    Graingy rail equipment is a mix of standard stock we bought on the cheap from elsewhere, and custom built by the company for our own use.
    Our primary design focus is on the 3m gauge servicing the Nunavut facility, since it's entirely proprietary and can't be replaced so easily. We do, of course, retain some old 2m stock, and we have built the odd 2m line here and there to use it since the Yukon facility fell into disuse, but overall it's pretty uncommon since standardizing on 3m for heavy transport is much preferable overall. 2m tracks are usually short, regional lines. None longer than 50km last I heard, though allegedly a new 60km line is being considered connected to the old Yukon 2m track extending further inland to a minor facility in the BC interior. A pretty big gauge for a rather small factory, but it's better to build too big than too small.

    @Boeing727200F I swear to all we're going to have to start burying landmines around the tracks

    Also I’m VERY interested in graingy’s rolling stock.

    You know funny enough North American Aviation is currently having a similar issue at one of our factories. You already know we own our own rolling stock, but the tracks that lead up to our properties are owned by whatever railroad exists there. Turns out one of those tracks were turned into a rail trail without our prior knowledge, and we tried to get a small train full of new fuselages out of our property. The second we left property lines the train went onto nonexistent tracks and quite obviously derailed. 2 bikers died after crashing into the derailed train. And it is somehow OUR fault for their deaths? We were not even told the tracks were out and now we lost a full consist of rare rolling stock and cost 2 deaths.
    (Oh and this was thought out a while ago I just wanted to say something now as I’m too lazy)

    @Boeing727200F The standard was for two-way service. Normal stuff, the like. The 2m gauge was for larger, heavier loads. Stuff you can't fit on a standard gauge line. It was for large-piece shipments only (unless schedule otherwise clear), so could afford to only have one track. We wanted closer to 3m, but again, funding. That was many decades ago, of course. The next headquarters got better infrastructure as we had greater funds when constructing it.
    The original Yukon HQ still has some large storage vaults, but is otherwise a rotting ghost town (see end scene of TCsoSBKwsiton) The 2m gauge rail is maintained for access in case something heavy needs to be removed. It is problematic when sabotaged as it necessitates repair, if only for the rare cases it's used.

    @Graingy why broad gadge?
    also how much of the track is still useable

    @Boeing727200F Two standard, one broad (2m). 2m wasn't considered ideal, but budgetary constraints forced our hand.
    We are and aircraft company, after all, so if it was really an issue we could probably just fly it.
    Still happening, unfortunately.
