@JABH the vtol engine doesn't need exhaust scale. The power, well that depends on if you want the afterburner flame to generate thrust. All modification on exhaust scale should be done on the nozzle. And scale them equally otherwise they will look weird when turning because the exhaust flame follows global axis.
And it's good to clear doubts when you have the chance.

Set this Throttle > 0.9 in the input section of the VTOL engine and it will activate when throttle is greater than 90%.

You gotta have at least 1 VTOL engine on your plane

@JABH by the way, do you have any specific conditions for it to activate? Are you trying to replicate a vapour cone Or smoke trail?

@JABH to make it look like a exhaust flame, you will have to change it's exhaust color via overload menu and some additional tweaks if necessary.

They are not smoke trail but exhaust flame. I don't think you can use it as a smoke trail
