The evolution of an RJ build

Introduction

I've been here a while and created quite a few builds (mainly aircraft) but I don't very often post things on the forum or create any basic tutorials (barring my camo post).

So I thought why not give a breakdown of how I start / progress / finish a build.

Firstly, I save a lot, the game has bitten me too many times with lost progress for me to do anything else. For some reason my saves start at 1.0 then 1.1 etc. so no 0.1, 0.2 etc. (no idea why, just my quirk I suppose).

For this post I am going to use my latest WW2 style fighter to show how it all comes together:

Stage 1

We start with a concept, a basic compilation of some stock parts I have made (I have made so many builds there comes a point where I cant see the point wasting time recreating the wheel, I do tend to rescale, rebuild / add to them so they all end up different anyway) and then I create / fill in the interesting bits to form the varied / interesting build. In this instance I wanted a heavy ww2 style fighter to start with (sometimes a build evolves naturally into something else).

1

Stage 2

I didn't like the fuselage design or the stock wings so I remade both (I wont go into too much detail on this post)

2

Stage 3

I started to add some fun bits, who doesn't like exhausts and cannons right? I also added the infill bits between parts to start to smooth things out a bit and I also started on the cockpit position etc. Note how this was only build save 1.6, I was obviously on a role and the saves start to add up later on when I create moving parts / camo.

3

Stage 4

Undercarriage, does anyone actually like creating undercarriage bays on ww2 wings... This all took quite some time to get right, lots of loading in and testing position of doors (hence the massively weighted test stand on the right wing). I wish the game recorded time at this point, I must have loaded and tweaked 20+ times to get the doors just right. The ailerons have also been added at this stage but no flaps.

4

Stage 5

What's a RamboJutter build without a camo scheme right? Here it starts with some basic colouring to get an idea of where we are at / how best to apply it. Notice the tail is completed in this stage (extra camo ontop of the stock part). I have also started to add actual lifting wings etc. to get a basic flight model. You can also see my airbrake pod added to the top, airbrakes for; -Throttle, +Pitch, -LandingGear, VTOL dn etc.

5

Stage 6

Camo progressing, lots of panels laid over the basic shape, much more complicated on tapered wings = lots of triangles...

6

Stage 7

Camo mainly done, roundels added and bent around the build (time consuming but worth it, I cant stand seeing the clagged on flat ones on a rounded build.) Letters also started, I do these in multiple parts so I can also bend them around the fuselage shape

7

Stage 8

Re-coloured to see what the actual colours look like on the specific build, added the custom cockpit but not yet adjusted the fuselage panels to match in, moved actual wings etc. into the build after some test flying (without the stand obv.)

8

Stage 9

Adding more armament and other build tweaks (note extra little wings at the rear fuselage to help balance the flight model. 14 rockets take some doing to move around, I always move 1 part up by 2 then attach that single part to the build, move the part back down then select the lot by lots and lots of clicking before moving into position and rotating as required.

9

Stage 10 completion

All done, there are bound to be some tweaks that I have missed or I could spend another week adding tiny details but this is the stage that I decide if I have had enough (and post it) or decide to add to the build further. Sometimes I think of other bits I would like to add in the future and make a note of it for a MK2 or MK3 style build.

Boom, thanks for reading

@MartinAeronautics Thanks, im glad you enjoyed seeing my build process. I follow pretty much the same process with each build so i thought people might like a bit of an insight, plus you never know it might help or inspire others =)
