Nowruz: The Persian New Year

Nowruz, meaning "New Day," is the Persian New Year and one of the oldest celebrations in the world. It marks the beginning of spring and is celebrated on the vernal equinox, usually on March 20 or 21. This ancient festival has been observed for over 3,000 years and is deeply rooted in Persian culture and traditions.

People prepare for Nowruz by cleaning their homes, known as khooneh-tekouni (spring cleaning), and setting up the Haft-Seen table, which includes seven symbolic items starting with the Persian letter "S." These items represent different aspects of life, such as health, prosperity, and rebirth. Families gather to celebrate, exchange gifts, and visit relatives.

One of the most exciting parts of Nowruz is Chaharshanbe Suri, the fire-jumping festival held on the last Wednesday before the new year. People jump over bonfires, chanting traditional phrases to cleanse themselves of negativity and welcome the new year with renewed energy.

Nowruz is not only celebrated in Iran but also in many countries across Central Asia, the Middle East, and the Balkans. It is recognized as an international holiday by the United Nations, symbolizing peace, renewal, and unity among different cultures.

Happy Nowruz! May this new year bring joy, health, and success to all!
