Battleplane Crash Incident between China and US
On April 1, 2001, while a US Navy EP-3 electronic intelligence reconnaissance aircraft was scouting over the waters near Hainan Island, China, the Chinese naval aviation deployed two J-8II fighters to conduct a reconnaissance interception, and one of the wingmen collided with the US aircraft over Hainan Island (70 nautical miles south-east of Hainan Island in China's Exclusive Economic Zone), and the Chinese jet crashed. Pilot Wang Wei escaped by parachute and was later confirmed dead by the Chinese side.
The Chinese side accused the U.S. reconnaissance aircraft of intentionally hitting the J-8 and landing on Chinese territory without notice or permission, while the U.S. side claimed that the EP-3 was hit by an out-of-control J-8 and brought to the airport by another Chinese J-8.
The incident ended with a vague “apology” from the U.S. side, the release of Chinese personnel and the return of the aircraft.

For us, this incident is very serious and should not be forgotten.
