The Pummeler is perhaps one of the most recognizable Pilotmario Air Force airplane, due to its longetivity, versatility, and its extensive use by the Pilotmario Air Force, as well as by other nations. There are numerous variants and upgrades done to the machine over the years, spawning numerous variants. It was developed by Barracuda Island Test Center Highlands as an aircraft which was not only easy to fly, but also one that an experienced pilot could benefit from.
The first of these are the Pummeler Mk 1, with a fighter, attack, and reconnaissance variant. While it was a well-liked aircraft, there were several teething complaints, notably the fact it was too heavy. As a result, the type was upgraded to the most definitive of the Pummeler series, the Mk 2. These Mk 1 aircraft saw service in the First Olympian War, with success.
Like its predecessor, the Mk 2 came in a fighter, attack, and reconnaissance variant. However, it also spawned trainer, long-range patrol, and even unmanned target drone variants. While it soon became obsolete as a fighter after the introduction of the Hawk, it remained in other roles to this day. Notable is the attack variant, and is perhaps the most recognizable of any of them.
The Pummeler Attack Mk 2 was developed based on the success of the Pummeler Fighter Mk 1/2 as an attack aircraft. Featuring additional lightweight armor and pylons for munitions, it proved especially lethal and accurate. It was valued for the immense firepower of its eight .50 caliber Mk 2 machine guns, durability, and endurance. However, these guns were useless against heavy armor, and thus the Mk 3 and Mk 4 was developed.
Initially, a Pummeler Attack Mk 2 was fitted with four 30mm Mk 9 cannon in gun pods. However, the installation was too heavy. The 3rd Attack Squadron attempted to fit four Mk 9 cannons in the wings, but due to the design of the gun, jammed frequently and was not adopted. Instead, the Pummeler Attack Mk 3 and Mk 4 were developed using the lower-powered but more reliable Mk 8 cannon. Both the Mk 3 and the Mk 4 are essentially rearmed variants of the Pummeler Attack Mk 2. The Mk 3 featured two wing-mounted Mk 8 cannons in place of the eight wing-mounted Mk 2 machine guns. However, while the gun provided valuable anti-armor firepower, the slow fire rate of the guns hindered its use against infantry.
To remedy this, the Mk 4 was developed, doubling the amount of Mk 8 guns, totaling 4 Mk 8 cannons. In addition, the Mk 4 was equipped with four Mk 2 machine guns in order to restore some anti-personnel capabilities. To improve its performance, it was fitted with the wider-bladed Navy propeller. The Pummeler Attack Mk 2, Mk 3, and Mk 4 all served together.
The Pummeler Mk 1 and Mk 2 was also employed by the Pilotmario Navy as a fighter-bomber for a much longer period of time, due to the inability for larger aircraft such as the Hawk and the Maverick to be used on the deck of the Tiny-class carrier. Navy Pummelers are distinguished by enlarged elevators, folding wings, and wider-chord propeller blades. These aircraft could carry a single torpedo. There was also a floatplane variant of the Pummeler, used as a spotting aircraft for capital ships. These were phased out when the ships themselves were. They can be distinguished by the larger propeller, lengthened wings, enlarged tail section, and twin pontoon floats.
In addition to these variants, the Recce variant also saw considerable use. The Pummeler Recce Mk 1 was designed for long-range penetration flights into enemy territory in order to gain intelligence. This aircraft was unarmed. However, with the introduction of the Dart Recce Mk 1, they were converted for the role of forward air control and damage assessment, creating the Mk 2. The Mk 2 featured an extended canopy, extra radios, and pylons for smoke rockets. They were distinguished by orange wingtips. This aircraft was highly successful, and pilots noted that even their mere presence would sometimes cause Olympian and IJ United forces to disengage.
The aircraft was a success for Barracuda Island, who sold the type to many countries. It is the most widely used combat aircraft, with numerous foreign variants and upgrades. In many regional conflicts, it is not uncommon to find both sides using Pummelers. Because of the large number produced, it is one of the cheapest aircraft, and its durability, maneuverability, and firepower ensure it continues in Pilotmario Air Force service. Many replacements were designed, but proved too expensive or inferior to the Pummeler.
A notable variant of the Pummeler is the Twin Pummeler, which is basically two Pummeler Mk 2 fuselages mated together with a central wing section. While it had good firepower and superior endurance, the Pummeler proved adequate, and the Twin Pummeler was primarily used as a maritime patrol aircraft.
Its longevity and wide use ensured that there would be many nicknames. Olympian soldiers referred to it as "Thanatos' Sword" due to the firepower of its guns. IJ United Forces called it the "Widowmaker" due to its effectiveness. HR Incorporated forces called it "The Green Angel" due to its effectiveness and prevalence in close air support and its green camouflage.
To the Pilotmario military, it is often known by various nicknames, depending on the variant. The Mk 2 Recce was known as "Orange Tips" due to the orange wingtips, painted so pilots could visually recognize the forward air controller. The trainer variant was called "greenhouse" due to the canopy design. The aircraft in general is known as the "Hog" due to its pragmatic and durable nature compared to flashier types. Furthermore, it is often seen at dusty, snowy, or muddy forward areas, where cleaning was done more sporadically, and therefore looked as "dirty as a hog" compared to high-performance fighters and cargo aircraft, which are cleaned and waxed on a regular basis.
The type was popular among enthusiasts due to its low cost. However, a spate of accidents due to worn airframes that culminated in the death of famous movie star Curtiss Black and his wife Melanie in a 2-seat conversion caused the Pilotmario Aviation Authority to issue mandatory inspections. Most were found to be unsafe to fly. Most civilian owned Pummelers were sent to vineyards for parts. Currently, KRIEG and Dragot Aerospace produces 1/1 scale aircraft based off original plans in the form of kits. These are slightly more expensive and require some assembly but are new aircraft. @SimpleTechAndResearch
Can't it be unarmed and used as a stunt Plane too?
Yeah, sometimes jet-powered cargo aircraft can outrun it. Most aerial victories the Pummeler gets now is against liaison types and helicopters. @ShatterFox
@Pilotmario Ok lez test if it can out run anything Borrows Pummeler Fighter, Puts in fight against Incher-K5 Ya k.
@ShatterFox The Pummeler has successfully operated in contested airspace with jet-equipped opponents more than once. They never operated without other aircraft since the First Olympian War, when their main aerial opponent were Athena Fighters, which they could fight after expending ordnance. When guided missiles came in the picture, some Pummelers were equipped with jammers and radar locators in order to find and destroy radar stations. This and the fact that they often flew below ground radars ensured that SAM was not a threat. Shoulder-fired IR-guided missiles were useless; the air-cooled radial engines didn't provide sufficient heat signature to form a lock, since they were programmed to track the much hotter aircraft exhaust of jet turbines, not something the temperature of a high-performance car engine.
While fighters could easily destroy the Pummeler, fighters often had other priorities, such as PAF fighters and the accompanying stream of heavy bombers reducing city to ash and rubble. Some Pummelers were equipped with a pair of Sidewinders, which they mostly used against helicopters. Plus, the Pummeler was designed as a fighter; it can outmaneuver or outrun almost all opponents it will face. The deadliest threat to the Pummeler in all the conflicts it participated were rudimentary low-level defenses, and the Pummeler had the armor and performance to get away with it.
Wow, @Pilotmario
@Pilotmario Will be in inadequate when someone declares war on ya with a better plane.
@ShatterFox There are plenty of different planes I have made. But the Pilotmario Air Force really likes them. They've been in service for over 20 years, and there is no sign that they would be inadequate in the future. It's a symbol of the Pilotmario Republic's military might.
@Pilotmario Get some variety into ya.
@Pilotmario Except mine doesn't have nearly as many variants as yours, you rlly need an upgrade bro xD
@Hadesrocks This is the story of the plane which your troops called "The Green Angel".
@ShatterFox I suppose.
Just Liek mah StarFall :3
