Inspired by SimplePlanes - A Thing I Want To Try Over Summer But Probably Will Not

837 Sofa  8.7 years ago

There's a concept of a game about which I've constantly fantasized. In it, players design and build ships, aircraft, and ground vehicles, which they use in a vehicle combat / strategy sandbox based around encountering other factions, destroying enemy naval fleets, capturing islands, acquiring resources to build bigger and badder stuff, and ultimately work toward their goal of dominating the map. So From the Depths, but less woefully complex and aesthetically grating.

SimplePlanes (and UnstableOrbit's SimpleWarships project) has inspired me to stop bawling about how the game doesn't exist, and to take efforts to make it stop not-existing. Although I am a scumbag, I don't want to be an Idea Guy who pays people in "exposure" to make things for him. If I'm going to host a feast, I'll need something to bring to the table, and the dishes I have - concept art and basic 3d modeling - sound like paltry appetizers.

Therefore, I think I'll try and spend some of my summer chained to my computer, trying to learn how to code stuff in order to make a simple (ish) prototype for the concept. Something more along the lines of, say, Warship Craft, where you build ships in the editor (which I could see being similar to SimplePlanes', especially with the use of fuselage parts to make a hull, though maybe unifying vehicles into a single object rather than multiple pieces with their own physical properties, if possible) and them fight them. That would require knowledge of (a) how to make the vehicle editor, (b) how to make the game world, and (c) how to make water physics. All of these things sound very difficult and I've never programmed a thing in my life. Best case scenario, I actually pull it off and then go to people and say "hey lookit this prototype I made, let's put a team together and make a full game out of it". Worst case scenario, I get bored of the concept and get my brain to finally shut up about wanting it.

Not sure why I'm posting this, maybe it's the coffee. Or maybe I'm hoping someone "steals" the idea and makes it themselves. Either way, thank you for the inspiration, Jundroo, I really like your game and thanks for giving me an idea for a way to spend my summer.

Now that the semester has ended, I'm going to try and get started.

All the "beginner tutorials" for C# seem to assume I know my head from my bum when it comes to computer stuff, which I do not. This is gonna be tricky. But I want to at least make an attempt to learn it before I get started on art assets.

@Delphirier @Static It's more the mechanics of the campaign I'm referring to, though I guess it just takes some getting used to. Moreover, though, is the aesthetics: I'm not a fan of the "kitbashy" look to it.

@Delphirier Yeah, it would have been much better if they just kept custom cannons, and added an EMP ammo box. I would have preferred that much more.

@Static My reaction when cram cannons were added "The f**k is this crap?"

@Delphirier Exactly! I hate the new "packing" mechanic!

@Delphirier FTD is complicated at first, if you don't know what you're doing, but eventually you get the hang of it... Unless they screw everything over by removin the spin blocks you used for all your turrets and then changing all your cannons significantly, introducing another type they call "advanced"...

From the depths isn't complicated e.e

@Sofa I'm sure he'll be happy to help where he can, and if he can't, there's a massive community.

@Skua Seems to be the case from what people say, yeah. I have a friend from Garry's Mod (one of the contributors to the ACF addon) who said he'd help show me the ropes, but I'd imagine he'd have to explain it to me as though I were a child.

@Sofa a lot of people spell it like that too. Here was me thinking a simple, four-letter name would be convenient... "Skau" and even "Stuka" show up occasionally too.

As for learning Unity: as far as I know, it's one of the most idiot-proof ways to build a game. I know next to nothing about anything relevant, but the only real issues I've had have been trying to make something work with SP, rather than with Unity itself. The documentation is really helpful.

@Skua Yeah, Unity was what I was looking at. Obviously I known't the faintest thing about how it works, but I figure this is my opportunity to try and learn.

On an unrelated note, I keep misreading your name as "suka" (сука). :I

True. Still though, Python may be better if OP is a beginner. @Skua

@Sirstupid python doesn't work with Unity, though, which is what SP was made in. If Sofa is looking to do something similar to SP, that may be a good starting point
