Am I stupid for doing this?

49.1k Flightsonic  8.7 years ago

So, my dad comes home (he works on 3D designing to fix problems with cars that haven't been released to the public (so technically an engineer)) with a part from a car... that part happens to be the fan for the radiator, this thing spins something like 30 thousand RPM on a twelve volt battery... so what I do, I start sketching to make a single man hovercraft, propelled by a leaf blower, it should work (I only weigh around 90 pounds) but am I stupid for thinking it will work?

@Yottabyte1024 that would hurt if my hand went in there

@Mitis nah, I've had my fun with leaf blowers and bikes (though I would want to make a pulse jet engine bike like in that one video)

@Delphirier well I could go 24 volts and pray it doesn't burn (or chop my hand off, mind you, this thing cools car engines)

Get a couple of airbags and a rudder and you will be set for life.

@Nickasaurus that sounds like a strong leaf blower

@FrankieB well apparently i dont have the planes anymore but: it was a circle of balsa wood with a skirt made of a plastic cover made to protect your floors. then i used pvc (like you said) to connect the nozzle of the leaf blower through the wood to the skirt. the i used a broom to push myself around. i had to get rid of it awhile back so i couldnt tell you the strength of the leaf blower.

@PlanesOfOld SimplePlanes In real life, that would be cool to make a personal drone that you can fly in, but idk what the FAA will think about that

@PlanesOfOld well I like to think of my self as his American counter part. Only Im a freshman in highschool with no job and he gets LOTS youtube money. Also I'm more aerospace oriented.

Hahah well I'd suggest not going near water then! Take to the skies! @Flightsonic

I say as a safer option (if like me you hate being drenched with lake water) is to build a simple hydroplane, they do it in scrapheap challenge so why can't you? Your fan would make the PERFECT impeller! @Flightsonic

Nope....not at all. I thought injecting propane into the oxygen stream of a hybrid rocket engine was a good idea. We have one less shed.

I have made an RC hover craft with some fans a bit of plywood and a bin bag it's simple but if you get it wrong things get.... Nasty my little hovercraft ended up at the bottom of a lake after the skirt exploded.... On its 2nd run sigh... 5 quid down the drain almost Litteraly

@PlanesOfOld but I just remembered... the motor burnt in a past incident...

@PlanesOfOld I mean, it wouldn't go fast by any means, the fan that I was talking about is only a foot in diameter, and wouldn't be in the water

I have heard that going at speed on water is not the most safe motor sport to get into... Sir Henry Seagrave rather ironically ended up in the sea.... Killed in his speed boat trying to take the water speed record back for the British empire,
I would suggest trying to utilize this fan as a means of creating a ducted fan powered machine, either a model plane or possibly a car, hovercraft more risky, more things to go wrong, a normal boat on the other hand would be good, you could use the fan as an impeller for extra propulsion and make a hull capable of planeing, go for it!

@Flightsonic @KingDeadshot just one good gas leaf blower will do.
