Close Support Aircraft Performance Trials: Acme-Bandit T-86 Topiray

147k Pilotmario  8.5 years ago

OVERVIEW:
The T-86 Topiray has decent performance for an aircraft of this simplicity, but has terrible forward visibility. Because of this flaw, the type is completely unsuited for the role.

COMBAT PERFORMANCE:
The aircraft's range under a full combat load is considered adequate. The terrible forward visibility does not allow the pilot to acquire, target, and ultimately destroy the target.
Airbrakes were not present and were requested, especially one attached to a VTOL slider.

INTEGRAL FIREPOWER:
The six Mk 2 machine guns in the wings are adequate, but lack the volume of fire the Pummeler and the anti-tank ability of the Boar.

EXTERNAL LOADS:
The external weapons load is comparable to the Pummeler, and inferior to the Boar.

DURABILITY:
The type was a very sturdy design, with the survivability of the Pummeler. The small size make it a much smaller target than the Pummeler.

VISIBILITY:
Cockpit visibility is terrible, even worse than the Pummeler. The mid-mounted wing combined with the low height of the cockpit seat make it difficult to see directly in front of the aircraft.

LOGISTICS:
The use of the T2000 engine with Mk 2 propeller made maintenance easy. The use of fixed gear simplified the aircraft greatly.

OFF THE BOOKS:
Several landing accidents were reported due to the poor visibility. No fatalities reported. The type was grounded pending investigation.
