War Letters: Persian Light Infantryman

147k Pilotmario  8.3 years ago

This letter was recovered in Korea from the body of a fallen Persian soldier while our soldiers were checking it for documents of military value. Names have been censored in order to protect the families. As the letter was undelivered, it had not reach the censors.

Dear XXXXX(a female, most likely a wife given different last names and different origin),

As usual, the Paternian Army is nowhere to be seen. For days, we find no resistance. It is as if God has banished them from the land! Almost that is.

They fight cowardly, never fighting face to face. Always running when we begin to win. Never holding their ground. And so we take the ground in God's name.

But when they leave, they leave us nothing but dirt. The fields of rice and wheat have been dried and burned but for a few. The animals we find in the abandoned pens look to have been rotting for several days. Every one of them. Dogs, cattle, horses, even swine. All dead.

When we were thirsty, we found a well and drank from it. Half the unit fell ill, and we decided to investigate the well. As it turns out, the Paternian Army threw a dog carcass in it.

Such is our unfortunate situation. It seems we cannot call you as we have done before, and have resorted to writing letters by hand. Even this letter I am uncertain it will reach you. Their cowardly airplanes do not shoot at us when we fight, but at tunnels, bridges, and mountain passes.

Because of this, we have only enough food to last us a week. If supplies are not forthcoming then, we are left to eat maggots and grass.

The hunger is true. It drives my comrades mad, and some have already ran. We caught a few and had them shot. In one case, we smelled the distinct smell of beef cooked over an open fire. Our officers could not control them, and quite a few charged haphazardly to the smell. Our lieutenant began to distribute captured cigarettes to plug our noses, which worked for those who did.

My will was iron, and the Paternians could not tempt me with their food.

As it turns out, every one of the men from our company who charged the beef were either shot, had their faces carved up from their knives, or themselves carved up by machetes. A truly horrible scene. Willing to die for a morsel of meat.

Despite the cowardly ways of the Paternians, they make travel dangerous. It is as if every bend in the road is a landmine, rocket, or sniper. Two days ago, it was a railgun fired from the back of a jeep. The round punched through three of our trucks and the front of one of our tanks, destroying all of them. As usual, they broke and ran as soon as we began shooting back.

It irks me to no end that we cannot defeat these cowards faster. Perhaps this is God's plan, to test our resolve to the end. For most of my company, they failed. But we few who are left still hold strong. They have not broken our will.

God's word as told to Muhammad shall become true, and the infidels who oppose him be driven to Hell!

Corporal XXXXX

@MemeKingIndustriesAndMegaCorporation Perhaps the order was to not bring them, since it was believed that like the campaigns in China, where they were basically dead weight and were handled more than used, they would not be necessary for the advance into Korea.

@Pilotmario Actually it is not. Unit Commanders HAVE to follow orders. an Inspection officer for every Unit Double Checks if they have sufficient/Required equipment. the Officer comes directly from the Main Office. not as a Soldier or part of the Unit

@MemeKingIndustriesAndMegaCorporation Yes, but it is up to them to determine whether they bring it or not. Unit commanders have their preferences, and perhaps decided not to bring it because they never needed them in China or Nepal. The unit was probably lost, however.

@Pilotmario We Manufacture and distribute Supplies equally throughout Awwam. we do it based on the Number of Soldiers for each Company,Brigade,Division and so on. it appears he must've been lost. which is. quite sad.

@MemeKingIndustriesAndMegaCorporation I see. Their field time was extended greatly due to complications with logistics caused by our air force. Communications were lost, and had to take the long way back to base.

I suppose the humidity absorbers issued must have been either broke or were left behind. Given our analysis of your campaign through China, where your forces were able to be supplied by looting the local population (a legal tactic) or through your logistics system, they figured that self-sufficiency was not as important as other things that could be brought along, such as ammunition and other combat equipment.

@Himynameiswalrus Yep. Though he did die in combat, so there's a shred of honor there.

@Pilotmario Its unfortunate really. this is a gruesome environment no Soldier of Awwam should face. I was going to bless them. but realized this was an online story roleplay. regardless. Water shouldn't be an issue given that Each soldier is given a set list of items and material. Humidity Absorbers are a thing that's supplied. As this was also a Light Infantryman. I Assume their return time far beyond than what is usual since they have the shortest field time. Still though. the Soldier was supposed to return back. but didn't make use of the equipment he had.

@MemeKingIndustriesAndMegaCorporation Can tell. We tried some. It's good. You've got more menu options than us.

However, he already stated that there isn't much of that going around, due to the damage done against logistics. With little food going around, the men are becoming increasingly desperate, to the point where they would break ranks and charge a squad of unseen and entrenched Paternian paratrooopers.

@Pilotmario I'm gonna be fair. its the Soldiers fault for breaking from Squad or Platoon. Persian Soldiers have the best MRE's since we have the entire Oriental Cuisine at our hands.

@MemeKingIndustriesAndMegaCorporation I took both your perspective and my perspective into account with this letter. While the soldier is very confident in victory, I describe the immense attrition our hit and run and scorched earth tactics inflicted upon your troops, as well as hinting at the frustration at fighting an enemy which although defeated in every encounter to them, is not completely destroyed and a lingering threat.

The M9 Stinger tank destroyer is actually the only Paternian equipment mentioned in any capacity, as the "railgun on the back of a jeep". It was designed for airborne forces, and was designed specifically to engage from ambush. It was decided to point the gun backwards in order to reduce the machine's profile. It also makes it convenient when it must disengage, since the jeep is already facing the direction to simply hit the accelerator and run, since this thing as almost no armor to speak of.
