This image was taken on March 17, 1952. The CAC C-16A76 Wombat in the photo, serial number 14552 of the RNZAF, is on approach to land at an unidentified airfield. This same aircraft was lost two days later when attempting the first in-air refueling. The hose struck the propeller blades, which split it, causing the pilot to lose control for a moment and spraying fuel over the plane. Fuel had covered his windscreen and gotten into the engine, causing it to overheat. Before the pilot could react, a spark from the engine ignited the fuel, bursting into a flame that consumed the aircraft. Surprisingly, the pilot managed to bail out, but his parachute failed and he died on impact with the water.
