Why not XML downloads

Why when I download a plane on here, do I get an SPLANE file, instead of an XML file. The planes themselves are stored as XML files in the folder:
c:\users\ (your name) \appdata\locallow\jundroo\simpleplanes\aircraftdesigns\

And the SPLANE files are only like 6 bytes in size, not nearly enough file size to specify everything needed to represent an airplane in this game. The XML files are 10s or even 100s of kilobytes in size. And doubleclicking on an SPLANE file tries to launch Steam. I'm not sure how these SPLANE files are supposed to work, but wouldn't it be simply for this website to host the actual XML files, and let people download those and copy them into the correct folder to add these planes to their game?

.slpane files are not close to the XMLs used for storing data, it's just the letter codes (like YmFR2V for the F-35) that are used to download the planes data from the website. I'm not exactly sure where it goes from there.
