The hanger was silent except for the occasional cough from the maintenance crew in the 'breakroom' off in the corner. I approach my H-40, a small trolley parked next to it loaded up with heavy ordinance. Several missiles lie next to it on jacks. Footsteps became audible behind me. I paid them little attention as I came up to the step ladder on the cockpit. It was opened vertically, the bottom cockpit hatch still closed while the top was open. Several tools lie on the structural wing nearby.
The footsteps became clearer. Every step would echo around the hanger, every clank on the metal floor. I looked behind to see my wingman; Lynn. She was looking down at a file amd tablet. The screen slightly illuminated her face as she stared into the screen.
She looked up slowly, scanning quickly over the table with her eyes before locking them on me.
"We have a sortie coming up soon. Make sure your Hessian is ready"
I gave a quick nod before looking into the cockpit, clanking of boots starting again before slowly dissipating.
A short bell rang, followed by the sounds of chairs scraping on metal, then almost a stampede of footsteps coming my way.
Several figures crouched under the wings, picking up tools and moving them to open panels. One moved towards me, Me moving out of his way as he opened the bottom cockpit hatch to access the wiring. Pulling open a panel, he exposed a mess of wiring, all multicolored, and some stripped of their coating.
I took several steps back before turning around towards the hall. I walked for less than a minute before turning into a doorway. Several chairs laid around a table, my wingmen in the chairs. Jason sat opposite the door while Lynn sat to the right of it. I took the seat closest the door and opposite Jason. Lynn was still stairing down at her tablet while Jason had a small plate and magazine. A half eaten piece of toast was all that remained on the plate.
I reached into my breast pocket, pulling out a small, rectangular panel of glass. Swiping my finger over the center activated it. A light grey display with the letters 'Morning' appeared. I clicked the screen, the letters disappearing. Several icons appeared in the letters place. One drew my attention, a small, grey circular icon with a tiny exclaimation mark above it.
I clicked it, opening a almost black screen, a loading icon appearing as well.
Before It could finish, it cut off, as well as the lights. I looked up, unable to see anyone. Suddenly, the room shook before emergency lights flickered to life, bathing us three in a red glow.
"What... was that..." I murmured while standing up.
I walked over to the door, hearing several footsteps go by. I also heard two chairs scraping across the ground behind me, then a hand on my shoulder before it quickly removed itself. Jason moved past me into the hall, then glanced over at me before running down to the hanger.
I quickly looked behind me, Lynn right behind me as I turned the corner and ran after Jason, keeping a decent pace until the emergency lights were washed out by sunlight.
The large hanger doors were open, and my H-40 was turned to face the runway outside the hanger whilst being bathed in the morning sun. The missiles were loaded up, and the 20mm cannons were filled. A worker hands me my helmet, which I put on. I run under the wing to the cockpit, quickly running up the ladder into my seat, buckling up and sealing the cockpit.
The cockpit hatches close, leaving me in darkness for a quick second before my HUD lights up. A quick grid appearing before the hanger filled my screen. I look around, making sure everything is clear before maxing power to the engines.
The room fills with smoke, the engines roaring to life, then the plane pulling forward. The runway was clear as I pulled out of the hanger, setting up the brakes. A notification appears on the top left corner of my HUD, alerting me of the hostiles in the area. Three tanks and five aircraft. This'll be easy. I release the brakes, the entire craft lurching forward suddenly, reaching near takeoff speeds in a couple seconds.
I pull back on the stick, the nose rising slightly, then more. I feel little resistance after a moment, retracting the gear as I leave the runway behind. I trim up the elevators to level out before tracking the ground targets
I spot them quickly to the north. The three tanks moving fast. Leaving a large plume of dust and smoke behind them.
I gain altitude quickly, rising 5000ft up before moving into the optimal dive position. I push forward on the stick, the nose diving down quickly to reveal Earth and the targets.
A crosshair appears in the center of my HUD, lining it up to the center of the tanks.
I flip the plastic cap on the top of the stick, then firmly press down on the button, loosing three missiles into the group before pulling up quickly.
I take a deep breath pulling up, the G's getting to me. I check the altimeter, 89ft. That was too close. I look behind me, a large plume of dark smoke rising behind me. Targets hit.
I whisper a quick hurrah before turning back towards the runway.
Looking at it, I see Lynn take off, followed by Jason pulling up.
I cap the fire button, reaching to my side to activate coms.
I press it, returning my hand to the stick.
"Lynn, five Hostiles in air. Watch your six." I spoke
"I've already got one lined up... One away!" She returned, a missile ejecting from the wing into the distance, shortly followed by an explosion and faint cheers.
I make a quick grin before spotting two more hostiles. Jason quickly meets them, outmanouvering them before shredding them with his 12.7mm guns. Lynn spots another one, firing a missile at it. The missile impacts the plane, it detonating into a beautiful ball of fire.
Me and Lynn give a quick laugh before Jason spoted the last target; a bomber.
"Alright. Lemme get on it's tail" I say, flying quickly towards the oncoming bomber.
I glance behind me, Lynn and Jason forming up on my wings. I grin quickly before meeting under the bomber, pulling up and rolling to get on it's tail. I cut power to half not to overshoot as I opened up the 20mm cannons on it, absolutely shredding the tair section.
A fire broke out in the left engine as the tail sheared off, forcing the plane into a flat spin.
I power to 100%, powering through the black smoke with Lynn and Jason a short distance behind. I make a quick circle of the runway as Jason, then Lynn land. I line up with the runway, making a soft landing while pushing the breaks. Shutting off the engines, my plane slowly rolls into the hanger, the propellers slowing to a stop.
I slide up the visor on my helmet, then open the cockpit hatch, revealing the artificial lights that I've come to know...
