P3Dv4 or X-Plane 11?

16.2k Mox  7.4 years ago

So recently I got FSX off Steam for $7 on a sale, and I'm liking it a lot. It's a huge step up in realism from Simple Planes. But it's not quite meeting my standards for what I want in realism. I downloaded a few addons for graphics and such, but still I'd like more.

I've been looking into either Lockheed-Martin's Prepar3d and Laminar Research's X-Plane 11. They both are excellent simulators, which is why I'm having such trouble deciding which to choose. I haven't played either sim (I've only seen videos or read articles; those don't give me the big picture), so I was hoping some of you had.

I would like good graphics, realistic flight mechanics, good AI traffic, a relatively large selection of aircraft (they don't have to be built into the stock game but have to be easily accessible by download), and better scenery and airports than FSX.

Your help is very much appreciated! -M :)

@KCferrari true, though my emphasis is towards GA/Civil aircraft so I'm not going to invest in dcs. Both xplane and p3d have support for military aircraft, even if it is limited.

As for the flight controls, I'm more of a Boeing guy, so I'll put down that extra cash to get a yoke rather a stick.

@Mox Well, options never hurt. Sometimes its nice to toss around a fighter jet instead of civilian planes. As for sticks, I use a thrustmaster T.16000M fcs. if you want the full experience, I'd recommend a full hotas, just because using a little throttle switch on a stick is just... meh. Also gives you infinitely more buttons which are needed so badly in flight sims. Really depends how much you want to spend though.

@Mox If you want a nice little entry grade joystick I recommend the Logitech Extreme 3d Pro.

    @MasterLobster
    Amd 8350 @4ghz
    Radeon r9 490 4gb VRAM
    8gb ddr4 ram
Amd mobo (can't quite remember which model)
    1tb hdd (~150gb taken up)

Still looking for a good flight stick

you can also go DCS if you want maximum fidelity combat sim. Single planes are basically full sims, with every single switch being clickable and simulated. It is however, expensive, and a full HOTAS is needed to even enjoy it.

    Here's a comparison

    What specs do you have?
What flight stick do you have?
