So I'm thinking of buying an electric guitar. . .

Could I play jazz on that guitar? Just a regular electric six-string. Could I play, like, the jazz base on it if I muted it a bit and tuned it all low?

@TheLatentImage I've got a 20 hertz amp, I'm pretty sure. I have no idea what the other stuff is, but aye, I'd like to save for a 6-string (and a ukulele of all things). Thanks for all the tips, though! Of course, I do assume that as I get into music more, the modulators and gadgets and spooky things will come rather naturally?

@OtterOfToast you can get pretty much any sound you want with the right gear. The vast majority of guitarists use a six string guitar, so the variety of sound that can be created with a 6 string is wide. You don't need to spend a ton of money either to get a decent setup. You can spend $200-$300 and get a more than sufficient guitar. You can spend even less than that even, but make sure it is comfortable and plays a good sound. With a good multi-effects processor and a decent amp you can get tones that range from metal to country to jazz. Before you buy be sure to do your research, stay within your budget, and try to build yourself a setup that is dynic and versatile. You may find that as you expand your knowledge of music that your musical preferences may change a bit and having a setup that can allow for that would be a big advantage. Feel free to contact me with any questions that you may have.

@TheLatentImage Excellent! Alright, so say I wanted to go a bit higher pitched. Like-- I wish I could find an example, but like a lead jazz guitar. Something clean and plucky. Front and center. Could I do that with a six-string? I've heard the riffs but I was never able to see the instrument, so I thank you for you patience.

@KDS that's bass, not base. But I agree with KDS, if you want to play bass then get a bass guitar. But with that being said, both instruments are similar and your ability to play one will transfer over to the other. I primarily play a standard 6 string guitar, but I don't feel uncomfortable when I have a bass in my hands.

If you want too play Base, get a base (4 stringed) guitar, or it won't be very good base sound. Also a base guitar is a bit better if you have thick fingers over a 6 stringed one, the downside is that you can't really play anything else other then base.
