It's LOD probably. The closer you get to the trees the more detailed they become. There's no need to render detailed meshes if you are too far away to see the details, it would just be unnecessary work for CPU and GPU and would also consume the bandwidth.

They think that your in an airplane. If a plane flies that close to them they’d get swayed around.
