Flexing at End of Piston / Rotator Assembly

30.3k ChiChiWerx  6.9 years ago

So, I'm in the process of finishing up a fairly complex build, which has Fowler-style flaps which extend using pistons and pivot using rotators. The problem is that the rotators slide around on the end of the pistons quite a bit (you can actually observe the rotators slide around on the pistons whicle flying along), which makes my flaps (structural wings embedded in fuselage pieces) bounce around on my wing, especially when pulling Gs at higher speeds. Anyone know the fix to this issue?

@ChiChiWerx Np man! 1 is the magic number in my experience, 100 is perfect for builds over 500,000 lbs

@EpicPigster1 well, it seemed to do the trick, even when the mass was set to “5”...I’m going to see how low a mass I can get the rotators down to and still have the same stabilizing effect, thanks!

Do you have two flexible wing segments and two segment flap? That happened on my m-4. I had to add free moving horisontal rotators before and after the pistons of the outbord flap segment, so it can slide left-right along the wing trailing edge. Also make sure that powered rotators are alligned nicely along the wing. Disassemble my m-4 flaps for an example.

also, as mentioned below - reduce flap weight, that wont help with this problem, but is useful. Also try making wing unflexible in xml - change wing-3 name to wing-2. or try flexible if it is rigid (-2) now)))

Try playing in higher physics. It Reduces it by a lot But it’s still there

    • Lower your plane's speed.
    • Use two piston/rotator assembly instead of one and connect them to your flaps on both sides. This will add some strength.
    • reduce the mass of your flaps to zero.
    • dont use too many disconnected bodies. example: fuelage>rotator>wing>rotator>some more fuselage>rotator>piston>flaps.

@ChiChiWerx Yes. If they are less than 1 mass scale it will affect it.

@EpicPigster1 so increase the weight (mass) of the rotator? I don’t want this thing to be too heavy...?

Increase of the mass scale of the rotators if they are scaled. 10 should be good. If it continues, go to 100.
