SURVEY | What Turret Controls Do you Prefer?

25.2k JohnnyBoythePilot  6.9 years ago

I'd like to ask the Simpleplanes community to take this survey on what control scheme for turrets do they prefer. In this particular case, I'm working on a brand new night fighter/interceptor/tactical bomber dubbed the P8. It's going to have a dorsal turret behind the RIO.

Here is the survey (Also includes a few sneak peak screenshots!)

Thank you! All responses help!

If you have any suggestions, please state them in the comments. Thanks!

This survey will be open until Friday the 12th.

I would suggest adding a gyroscope with high stability and speed which is set on the same AG as the turret. This means that the turret can be linked to roll and pitch, and thanks to the gyro, it won’t make the aircraft roll or pitch when using the turret. If you tag me on an unlisted post I can show you how to do it very effectively and simply. @JohnnyBoythePilot

It's a WW2 interceptor/night fighter that I'm adding a turret too, and everything is manual (trying to be realistic). So VTOL controls constant speed props and trim controls both flaps and trim. The control surfaces locking is optional. Ex: AG-1 would activate the turret and AG-2 could activate control lock so the airplane is stable to use the turret. (AG-1 and AG-2 wont be used for those at this moment, this is just an example).

I’ve noticed that a lot of people said that the control surfaces should be locked when you are using the turret; but if it’s VTOL and Trim controlled (which the majority of people voted for), why should that be? It gives an advantage as you can manoeuvre if you need while the turret is activated and the VTOL and Trim have no effect on flight. By the way, try to make the aircraft point straight forwards in the air so there’s no need for Trim. Another way would be to put a very powerful modded gyroscope on the aircraft on the same activation group as the turret, so when you activate the turret (if you’re using roll and pitch), it won’t affect the aircraft much at all because of the gyro.

    VTOL/Trim is always preferable

F104Deathtrap’s Dauntless had good controls. Ag8 to stop the roll and pitch movement. And ag7 to activate the turret. Or just use the gyroscope to stop it.

Look for a bomber or a ship on simpleplanes. They always have turrets and some have working turrets.

    I've never tried a turret

I think that would start to clutter the screen up, but it could work in some cases. @JohnnyBoythePilot

Or better yet, AI controlled turrets.

If AI turrets aren't possible, a cool idea would be to have more sliders (aka "VTOL" sliders). You can have up to 4 of them, 2 that run horizontally and 2 that run vertically. All the sliders would be lined up against the borders of the screen similar to the VTOL and Trim slider. These sliders are simple: A gizmo such as hinges or rotators can be assigned to a slider.

Very useful survey, would be nice if everyone agreed on a set of controls for the community.

Thanks for the suggestion, but that's already a question on the survey.
I'd like you to take the survey so I can actually see data from the responses.

Never mind, I can see you submitted an answer on the survey, thank you!
