What's a slat and what is it for?

I've seen these flap like things on the front of a wing, but don't what for. Any clues anyone?

    They are lifting devices just like flaps. Usually they remain retracted unless the aircraft needs to fly at very low speed without stalling. Slats are situated at the leading edge of wings while flaps are at the trailing edge.

    @BreadOnButter no. There's no actual airflow for them to direct under wings. Maybe there are ways, but I don't know it.

    They are supposed to swing down at high angle of attack, reducing stall speed.
