Armoured Fighting Vehicle Challenge Results

245k EternalDarkness  6.4 years ago

I have decided to end my experimental "AFV Challenge". Idea was that a selected few would submit their designs, as opposed to open challenge. Unfortunately, some builds have been given up on, some builders went inactive, and I only got 10/20 entries, and it wouldn't even be that many if I haven't allowed one entry outside of original competicion to participate. From now on, I'll stick with successor challenges. Anyway, here are the results:

Type 183 ARV 'Shadow' by BlazeInfinity

  • Realism: 6/10;
  • Details: 6/10;
  • Design: 6/10;
  • Description: 3/10;
  • Functionality: 3/10;
  • Personal impression: 3/5

  • Score: 28/55;

Nice, but half-assed. Windshield is not angled at all, and brakes can flip the vehicle over its nose. Also, gun is left without a proper decorative cover, and the cockpit doesn't elevate with the gun.

Salamander II by Indecision

  • Realism: 9/10;
  • Details: 10/10;
  • Design: 8/10;
  • Description: 5/10;
  • Functionality: 6/10;
  • Personal impression: 4/5

  • Score: 42/55;

Very well made APC. However, it has a few flaws. I had to test a version with lower part count, so functionality is based on that one, and details, realism, design, and functionality on the public one. Biggest flaw in functionality is the lack of the gun camera.

D.Corp IFV-18 Drakon (Victory Day Special) by Dllama4

  • Realism: 9/10;
  • Details: 8/10;
  • Design: 9/10;
  • Description: 9/10;
  • Functionality: 9/10;
  • Personal impression: 4/5

  • Score: 48/55;

Very well made vehicle. Good behaviour, realistic design obviously based on T-15.

IFV A-1 Panther by Othawne

  • Realism: 9/10;
  • Details: 7/10;
  • Design: 8/10;
  • Description: 9/10;
  • Functionality: 9/10;
  • Personal impression: 5/5

  • Score: 47/55;

Great job in terms of functionality, with only one flaw: cockpit doesn't aim with the turret. That prevents a lock on missiles anywhere but in front of the vehicle. Details are few but well placed, performance are great, and presentation is excellent.

Rheinstahl forces APC-2 Leopard by Hawkeye156

  • Realism: 6/10;
  • Details: 7/10;
  • Design: 7/10;
  • Description: 9/10;
  • Functionality: 8/10;
  • Personal impression: 3/5

  • Score: 40/55;

Main flaw is the scale. This vehicle is twice as big as it should be. Also, piston recoil is obsolete technology. Still, hull design is good, and there's a lot of details. Engine is overpowered, and guns should go on a diet.

"Tardigrade" APC Hybrid by JangoTheMango

  • Realism: 3/10;
  • Details: 8/10;
  • Design: 7/10;
  • Description: 10/10;
  • Functionality: 9/10;
  • Personal impression: 2/5

  • Score: 39/55;

Very interesting light vehicle. However, far from realistic. A lot of interesting functions, but I had to take one point there as all that functions can't realistically be on a single vehicle. Overpowered, but with a great suspension.

'Lebastion' AFV-27 J.Industries 2.0 by ShxD4Hunt3R

  • Realism: 7/10;
  • Details: 8/10;
  • Design: 8/10;
  • Description: 8/10;
  • Functionality: 8/10;
  • Personal impression: 3/5

  • Score: 42/55;

A very nice build from a relatively inexperienced user. Moving parts, custom suspension, gyro stabilized gun, and interior are rare with users as new as ShxD4Hunt3R. However, the build is not perfect. It's twice as big as it should be, gun is downright ugly, and some edges are rough.

Do-10 'Tukka' Infantry Fighting Vehicle by XMarcoX

  • Realism: 6/10;
  • Details: 5/10;
  • Design: 6/10;
  • Description: 7/10;
  • Functionality: 6/10;
  • Personal impression: 2/5

  • Score: 32/55;

Very unusual APC. This concept could certainly use some refinement though. The vehicle is almost three times bigger than real one would be, and gun has a tendency to fall off if you change elevation while shooting.

ASCOD Espada by Mikoyanster

  • Realism: 6/10;
  • Details: 6/10;
  • Design: 6/10;
  • Description: 10/10;
  • Functionality: 6/10;
  • Personal impression: 2/5

  • Score: 36/55;

Not as impressive as I have expected. Usage of non-intuitive controls makes the vehicle difficult to operate. It's also full of details that wouldn't actually serve any purpose on the real one.
I don't think I have managed to test functionality to its fullest, due to controls being very uncomfortable to work with.
Impressive description.

ZSU-40-2 Khatanga by Leehopard

  • Realism: 8/10;
  • Details: 8/10;
  • Design: 7/10;
  • Description: 9/10;
  • Functionality: 8/10;
  • Personal impression: 3/5

  • Score: 43/55;

Same problem as with Mikoyanster. Control scheme is not easy to use on PC (or I'm just not used to it). Amazing effects with guns and missiles, nice bulky design, and realistic armament. Amazing tracks too.

S.Corp M-327 Antira by Diver

  • Realism: 4/10;
  • Details: 3/10;
  • Design: 3/10;
  • Description: 6/10;
  • Functionality: 5/10;
  • Personal impression: 2/5

  • Score: 23/55;

Good idea which is not really well executed. The design is too boxy, wheels of tracks have no suspension, there aren't any custom mechanisms, details are repetitive... Nice try, but far from top rated entries.

So, winners are:

  1. Dllama4 (48/55)
  2. Othawne (47/55)
  3. Leehopard (43/55)

    @Egancat I'm currently buried under a few other projects and real life stuff. I am planning to make an equivalent of Land Rover defender (I guess that's what you are asking for), but it could take months before I start on it.

    @EternalDarkness well but i cant bring anyone up aigan just because of the scale

    6.4 years ago
  • Profile image

    @Hawkeye156 that happens rarely. I bet you haven't even tried on this one. I did downscale it, and it worked right. It just needed suspension and engine tweaking.

    @EternalDarkness or its stuck in the ground

    @EternalDarkness i cant do that because the wheels would float in the air which maybe is a problem

    @EternalDarkness which place i am on that counter?

    6.4 years ago
  • Profile image

    @Hawkeye156 you finish all that, scale the build down via FineTuner, and then just tweak suspension strength, engine power...

    17.2k Hawkeye156

    @EternalDarkness because it gives me the ability for more detail work, better offroad suspention work and all the rh fr's are twice as big as they should

    6.4 years ago
  • Profile image

    @Hawkeye156 why don't you just scale the whole build to realistic size before you tweak performance?

    6.4 years ago
  • Profile image
    17.2k Hawkeye156

    @EternalDarkness if the next challenge wouöd get the criteria of realism could pla let out the aspect of scale. Because every one builds in other scale and for my scale the size is completely right

    @Hawkeye156 it most certainly won't be air superiority fighter challenge. There are five fighter templates, so all entries would look like one another. It'll be a broader subject.

    @EternalDarkness ehm for the next challenge i dont know if i would get itcause of vacations if you do some it would be nice to have "easier" chalenge and not air superiority fighter

    6.4 years ago
  • Profile image

    @Hawkeye156 there is "realism" criteria. 6.7m wide and 18m long APC is a thing of post apocalyptic movies.

    17.2k Hawkeye156

    @EternalDarkness but there were no criteria of being in "normal" size

    @Hawkeye156 off road capability of your vehicle is great. But it's twice as big compared to the obstacles than it should be.

    @EternalDarkness how was the offroad abillities of my apc?

    @XMarcoX I didn't allow any bad ones to compete. So, for your first take on IFV, qualifying is already a good thing.

    good enough for my first ifv xD

    17.2k Hawkeye156

    @EternalDarkness i couldnt scake it to normal and realistic size because i builded it for rh forces and they are allways twice as big as normal because of better detailing and better agility on offroad
