Space vehicles. Hmm. I dont know but so far ive only seen sleek, futuristic, or extraterrestrial-ish ones. Barely seen any realistic clunky ones. Should there be a "Most realistic spaceship" contest? Which kind of space vehicles do you think are most realistic?
@Aspire not a game, a tv series. I really suggest that you watch some of their space combat scenes so that you would really get what I mean.
@Ephwurd well those seem to be some of the most realistic spaceships in a game i think... i do like the no fancy weapons concept too, railguns are a thing, nukes, 30mm autocannon from the A-10 Thunderbolt perhaps?
Realistic spaceships? You got the ships from The Expanse, my friend. No jump drives, no energy shields, no fancy weapons. Just flying boxes strapped with 30mm miniguns, railguns and nukes. Their ships don't have windows nor overexposed bridges, as their CICs are buried deep beneath the ship's hull and they use sensors to "see" their enemies. Combat is pretty straightforward too. Enemy too far away? Throw some nukes! Too close? Fire up the railguns!
@Aspire Why use guns? At interplanetary speeds their range would be useless, a collision or a nuclear explosion would be ideal.
Lasers would be a good solution, but getting them to work over the necessary distance would be improbable. Not to mention the added mass for a necessary power source would drastically reduce the mneuverability of the vehicle.
@F104Deathtrap Ah, space drones. Never really thought of that. Thatd be a great idea for much reasons. And since there's no air, guns might need to be a bit more complex to allow the bullets to fire but when its fired, no drag and minimum gravity makes for great effectiveness. Also no need for silencers.
@Aspire A real fighting vehicle for space would probably consist of little more than a missile.
Humans can't cope with the G-forces that machines can, so why limit a spacecraft by putting a person in it? Why bother with a self-interested human that doesn't want to die when you can use a computer that will attempt to complete its mission at any cost?
@GenrichTitov Spherical-ish ship? Perhaps make the engine and bits move instead of the core so you wont need to 180 to brake? Kinda wack but maybe that could work and be realistic
@F104Deathtrap Well, i guess i should be looking around a lot more. I did see some rockets and a russian space shuttle tho
I would look forward to a build consisting of a spherical or hexagonal core, with beams forwards and backwards to allow placement of docking ports, radiators and also a greater rotative moment for turn engines/RCN. A single and powerful main engine on the back, still, to brake the ship you have to turn it 180°, but it is much better then having a special braking engine = more weight = more fuel consumption.
I'd empoly also a fleet of oval transport ships, which never land, accompanied with dozens of tiny transports like Space Shuttle in concept which carry the cargo to the surface or vice versa. Some ships may have bigger beams to allow docking, wider antennas, parallax effect. These ships will 100% have solar panels on their surface and in retractable "wings"
"Realistic space vehicles"
I've seen dozens of Shuttles, Soyuz and Apollo builds, even plenty of unmanned craft like Sputnik and Voyager.
Lakon Spaceways makes the most utilitarian looking ships
They probably use angle grinders to make the hull
@SpicyViper you can make some pretty good guesses though, it would most likely be a very un-aerodynamic conglomeration of spheres with girders holding them together. equal thrust in all directions.
(personally i would love to see a realistic space-craft challenge.)
Well not many people actually know what to aim for with what you call Realistic starships because the only true realistic space craft we have are space shuttles, so pretty much saying realistic starship is slightly ironic on itself when we don't actually truly know what to aim for with Realistic starships
