A Question On Exported Models

2,880 s5ehfr9  5.8 years ago

So I've been learning Unity recently and plan to make some kind of an actual game. Since Simple Planes is capable of exporting 3D models, is it possible to use Simple Planes' exported models in a commercial or non-commercial project?

I wouldn't go as far as to say that it is a "stupid" way to model, but traditional methods are much easier on the file size. That's alright though - as long as you are smart with the part count, then you should be fine!

I don't think so... I'm just starting and will probably have switched to blender by the time I start to make monetized stuff. I'd still like to know about the license for commercial games though, just for curiosity, if you would like to answer.

@s5ehfr9 If you are only using fuselage parts and blocks I suppose that would be okay. Are you making a commercial game?

@spefyjerbf I've opened an exported model in blender and I know what it's like. That's why I say it's a "stupid" idea to make models using a game. But given that my progress in learning 3D modeling is slow and I've made some good-looking stuff in Simple Planes, it becomes an option and that's why I'm asking here.

I know it's kind of a stupid idea to make models using a game, but I've built something in Simple Planes before which I think might be useful in my game. So it's more convenient to just export than to start building from scratch.

So does it mean that I can use exported models as long as it doesn't include any modeled parts? I mean like if there's only fuselages and blocks.

The problem with exporting models from SimplePlanes is that it includes the copyrighted part models that were made by the artists that have worked on SimplePlanes. We don't mind if you use them in a non-commercial product with proper attribution to the original airplane author and indicate that it came from SimplePlanes. If you have a commercial product in mind then things are more complicated.

In non-commercial projects, it should be fine to use simpleplanes models. Of course, if you are using another user's models, be sure to ask for their permission! I should add, though, that while many of the builds here are beautiful, the 3D object file is... messy. The file, due to how it was modeled, is massive for its detail. If you want, I can send you an image that demonstrates this.

Not sure. Maybe you'll be alright as long as you use 100% your own models you build and not others? I recently did a Blender 3D modeling project for my 3D modeling class and I used SimplePlanes to model a Bell-206-look-a-like helicopter and then exported it to Blender so I could animate it there.

I would assume that, if it’s your creation, you can do whatever with it, but if it’s someone else’s then you would need permission @s5ehfr9
What do the Devs say @AndrewGarrison

I mean the licensing stuff. I know that the exported model is usable in almost all 3D authoring software but are we, the players, permitted to use the models in commercial or non-commercial projects?@jamesPLANESii @Avro683Lancaster

I made the rails, overhead lines and fences for my Railway Designer mod in Simpleplanes
