T-03 "Dorito"

50.4k RepublicOfCursedPlanes  1.5 years ago

Original sketch.

This was originally built for AlivePan's LCA challenge, but AlivePan just got banned, so I don't know if the challenge will continue. Regardless, it's still a great airplane.

It's also my very first fighter jet, and my first time making rivets.

Credits to the Wasp for providing the cockpit interior, and PlanariaLab's HUD.

Cockpit Layout (for VR users)

This is VERY IMPORTANT, as you'll have a hard time finding all the buttons without this.

The switches not shown in this image are already labelled in-game.

Lore

The T-03 is an advanced jet trainer aircraft developed by RCP Engineering for the Republic of Cursed Planes Air Force, better known as the RCPAF.

It was first proposed in 1998 to replace the ageing A-4 trainer aircraft that the RCPAF had been using since the 1960s. The new aircraft would be equipped with the latest avionics and a fly-by-wire control system, and it would have be able to download a wide variety of training software to help pilots prepare for every scenario possible.

The RCP Engineering designers based the new aircraft off their latest 4.5th generation fighter, the F-03 (I forgot to photograph the sketch). As such, the final design retained many of the F-03's appearance and features, including a full-body delta wing and a single-engine configuration with the intake on the aircraft's underside, similar to the F-16.

After 3 years of development, the new trainer, now designated the T-03, took to the skies on 1st May 2001. Its NATO designation became "Dorito", due to its wing greatly resembling a Doritos tortilla chip.

The T-03 has remained in service with the RCPAF ever since. Attempts to sell the aircraft to other countries were unsuccessful as they preferred the Aermacchi M-346 Master.

Features

  • Simple, yet detailed design
  • Fully VR-compatible cockpit
  • Parachute and arresting hook included
  • Fuel tank and missiles are detachable
  • Mobile-friendly, with only 291 parts
  • No opening canopy, sorry

Weapons

  • 2 AIM-7 missiles
  • 2 miniguns mounted in front of the cockpit
  • 2 external fuel tanks (can be used as makeshift bombs)

That's it, I guess. Have a great flight, but don't leave your instructor behind!

    If you want to fix the issue of it not turning easily, just take the hinge rotators and limit them to 10-15 degrees of range

    Why do the flaps make the plane bank? And the rudder lever is just the trim lever. But I love the plane

    @ZeroWithSlashedO I mean, I wanted a full-length delta to make it cursed, and technically the canard can deflect air under or above the wings (I don't study aeronautical engineering yet so idk).
    Also for the landing gear, yeah I had to make some compromises on it.
    Honestly, I'm probably better at designing airliners, but I guess this was a good learning opportunity nevertheless.

    here's what I have to say about your counterarguments:

    1. delta wings are terrible for subsonic speeds, why? energy retention
    2. wait, so what you're saying is that you put a canard that is inches away from touching the wing? wtf
      I don't question the intake placement, but I question your control surfaces now what in the world
    3. unlike the F-16, this thing looks like the moment it stalls out, it's unrecoverable no matter what you do
    4. I don't mean that the landing gear is too low, I mean that the landing gear has no space (realistically) for it to retract, because it's taken up by the engine placement (this doesn't apply in SP ofc because SP's morfology can be easily bypassed lmfao)

    I have no comments for the last 2 points
    other than that, you're welcome

    1. this is a subsonic trainer aircraft, so it’s not built for speed;
    2. the engine intakes are at the bottom because if they’re on the sides, the elevators located on the front of the wing will block most of the airflow going into the intakes at a high pitch angle, and increase the risk of a stall;
    3. this design is basically another fictional fighter jet based off the F-16 (hence the unstable but manouverable design), but shortened to reduce mass, hence the goofiness;
    4. The landing gears are extremely low from the ground to compensate for the high ground clearance caused by said bottom engine intake;
    5. I kinda wanted this design to look “unconventional” and cursed, so that it could stand out against competing aircraft, which it now has.
    6. Also, I was inspired by the Aermacchi M-346, which is why it looks so short.

    Only thing I agree with is the small nose cone, but other than that, here’s my counterargument. You’re welcome.

    appearance review:
    6/10
    honestly, does not look very fun to fly, nor does it look appealing
    aircraft looks unstable, and it doesn't look aerodynamic
    nose cone looks too small for a radar
    thin, delta wings suggests a supersonic trainer configuration, but since the aircraft doesn't look that aerodynamic, I doubt it can go past mach 1 (realistically)
    engine config is... questionable
    so is the main landing gear

    however, this has potential
    if it's redesigned with proper aeronautical engineering in mind, it has potential to be a great platform
    I love delta wings. They're just, pog.
