30th January 2022 5.4 F99 Low Rider
Introduction
Competition entry for RAF1 pedestal aircraft contest.
The US Navy found out during Vietnam that the age of dogfighting wasnt over yet, they needed something that could compete with Russian designed aircraft in a dogfight.
This aircraft has a low pedestal wing installation that allows for angle of attack adjustments for the whole wing and thus increased manoverability at all altitudes and speeds. Its armed with 2no gattling cannon and 4 AIM 9 Sidewinder missiles. Capable of supersonic speeds and very high G combat (a system and a new parameter was needed for pilots to combat the high g nature of the aircraft and to ensure the selected pilots could withstand the higher forces).
Controls
AG1 = Reheat
AG2 = arrestor hook
AG3 = airbrakes (only 2 function if LG down is selected) 4 pettle variety
LG = landing gear
VTOL dn = flaps
Pictures
Static on Carrier
Flaps fully down
Reheat on, nozzle partially open
Takeoff and wheels retracting
Shooting for the moon
Information
The low wing causes all sorts of issues, nose landing gear position was not the least of these.. SP has connection issues with pistons but i have to use them on the nose gear to get a reasonable retract length for the bays (similar to the F4K of the Royal Navy) but expect some wobbling on hard landings etc.
The undercarriage doors where intentionally left not 100% perfect so you get a bit of panel line features to see where they are located etc (otherwise it was just a big boring white expanse).

@RAF1 ah OK, 1 entry it is then.
If you withdraw this design from the challenge, you can submit another. Yes, you can do something more classic, it does not not have to be modern.
@RamboJutter
@RAF1 is your contest limited to 1 entry? Oh and is it limited to modern aircraft or can i do something interesting while looking historical =)
i enterde before going trought other posts ... must admit im a bit salty at my brick android phone but amazing build .
She flies amazingly!! And I love that you made the pedestal act as a control surface as well. The aforementioned points I agree with, as the landing gear feel like they take a bad hit whenever you touch down, but all and all, this concept is sick!
amazing
Well done, mate! You hit the nail the head with this one!
Thanks @BaconAircraft I'll try not to do this too often =)
@BreadIsAfruit Theres loads of issues with the concept i feel. For instance the wheel geometery changes when the wing moves up or down so pitching up lifts the rear and puts the nose down (the opposite of what you want for takeoff and landing). Theres probably a reason Vought used a top mounted wing on the crusader... I tried to make the pedestal chunky to reduce how weak it looks dangling a wing below it.
I feel like this design, with the moving front wing would cause the LG to hit harder than needed on landing, and it would be quite flimsy, idk tho since there are a lot of flimsy things that work very well in airplanes that makes me wonder, but it’s really neat
Oh man, this is so freaking cool, great job
Odd design, but it is quite steady.
I’m going to lose. Great entry!
Love to see you embrace the pedestal fighter layout, this aircraft is a beauty!
@RamboJutter Done.
@BaconAircraft Afternoon, Im having some bother getting RAF1's competition to download i.e. it wont. If i post this seperately would you be so kind as to link it as a successor to his competition here?
