The McDonnell Douglas DC-9 is a former medium-sized twin-engine jet aircraft , designed and manufactured from the 1960s onwards by the then Douglas Aircraft Company (later McDonnell Douglas ) for commercial aviation use in domestic passenger transport. It has two Pratt & Whitney JT8D engines in the rear, fixed to the tail cone and has an empennage with two stabilizers, which are the vertical stabilizer, and the horizontal stabilizer fixed to it, which form the T-tail the aircraft was later used as a basis by Douglas Aircraft Company / McDonnell Douglas and Boeing to give rise to the MD-80 , MD-90 and Boeing 717 series models , produced until the 2000s.This entire family of twin-engine aircraft for use in commercial passenger transport, including derivatives with turbofan engines , is one of the biggest sales successes in aviation, with more than 2,400 (The DC-9 family was produced in 2,441 units: 976 DC- 9, 1191 MD-80 , 116 MD-90 and 155 Boeing 717 ) units produced, but in Brazil , curiously, these models had practically no market penetration, and to this day, people are trying to understand why was it made for.
