As part of the "America Bomber" program, the Horten XXVI (26) series of bombers was quite ahead of its time. The aircraft that they submitted were flying wings, something the world hadn't yet begun to fully realize. On August 13, 1945, Herman Goering approved the production of the A-3 variant of the XXVI, which featured two rear-facing barbettes, which could only elevate and depress. However, it made up fr the lack of defense in raw speed, which wa around 600-650mph (at cruising speed and altitude). It had a bomb capability of 12, including: eight 750kg bombs, two 1,500kg bombs, and two massive 2,500kg bombs. On January 1st, 1946, the first flight of XXVIs left Germany for America. Out of the sixteen-strong flight, one had to turn back due to mechanical issues in its instrument panel (the panel was not displaying certain things like speed correctly). The first cities hit were New York, Washington DC, and more along the eastern seaboard. None of the remaining fifteen bombers were shot down. One was forced to ditch in the sea near France due to the loss of its far left engine, but all crew members were eventually rescued. After the other bombers successfully landed, all crew members were awarded Iron Crosses for their success.
