[FICTIONAL]
D-8, or "Design 8" is a supersonic, supermaneuverable naval 4th gen fighter - interceptor designed in late 80's by the [...] bureau.
During the "great reorganization" period during early 80's the [...] air force had everything messed up, new demands from the [...] and new threats from [...]'s new bombers that were entering service rapidly really stressed out the [...] design bureau. The new fighter must've had the ability to carry a lot of missiles, while also being carrier - capable, meaning smaller spaces for storage. After about a year, first configurations were proposed, as well as first wooden mockups were tested in wind tunnels.
Although relatively big compared to heavy fighters of that era, D-8 has good maneuverability and low speed handling. Thanks to the newly developed [...] engines that were modified to have thrust vectoring for more agility, it could also achieve reasonable speeds and good acceleration. Said engines, at first, were installed higher for avoiding collisions with the ground at high AOA landing approaches, but they were moved down in order to reduce drag. To compensate for that, landing gear was made taller. Furthermore, air intakes were slightly angled inwards, allowing for the landing gear compartments to be bigger, which also allows bigger and bulkier landing gear and wheels to be installed, which would aid in rough and harsh carrier landings.
Main wings and horizontal stabilizers fold to around 40° inwards (130° for main wings, ˜ 50° for vertical stabilisers) to save space when parked on a carrier deck, while rear horizontal stabilizers fold up to 90°. In such conditions, D-8 was just as good or even better in terms of size compared to other, older naval planes. Wings were also reinforced, both to make them stiffer and increase fuel capacity.
In terms of armament, D-8 has 16 hardpoins (one wingtip, three wing, one intake and two belly pylons), satisfying the missile carrying demand. It also has a IRST sensor I'm front of the canopy, allowing it to have an edge in dogfights. A 25mm cannon is installed on the right side relative to the center, and chaff+flare countermeasures can be found near the tail and on the outside part of the engines.
Overall, D-8 turned out to be a successful naval intercepror, with around 300 units being built from 1985 - 1997. It served in many conflicts, but practically almost no kills were scored, due to the sheer nature of these conflicts; they were just that fast and peaceful. Still, D-8 will be put down in the [...] history as a great for it's time fighter that was made in a hurry and disbelief.
