Description
NK-2 Ryoshi is the first aircraft to be experimented using the new V-12 inverted engine. Designed by Harushi Yuukou and Kanojo Matabi who will later design the N-17, N18, and N-19 its successors. The NK-2 was designed in 1936 and made its first flight in 1938. The Eastarian airforce wanted a modernized plane that can allow pilots to fight at medium altitudes. It was the second plane to use oxygen tanks, making the N-16 the first to use it. There was only two aircrafts suited for the upcoming war and the summer campaign. The NK-2 and the N-16 were the only aircrafts available for the next year. The NK-2 made its first flight in August of 1938. Due to the war coming soon, improvements and production are forced to be rushed. The designers knew that its wooden airframe was heavy enough and couldn’t have any self sealing fuel tanks. The designers originally wanted the NK-2 to use a pair of 12.5mm machine guns and a 20mm but due to its heavyweight, they decided to make it use one 20mm and one 13.5mm. As the NK-2 make its first combat with a squadron of 15 aircrafts, they only came back with 6 aircrafts remaining. Production halt after the N-17 was designed and thousands of NK-2 were scrapped. They came back in service in 1945 to be used in the 15th air regiment to counter enemy dive bombers, ultimately making it a suicide mission. Present today there are only a couple of NK-2 flying for airshows and 50 on display in museums. It takes an experienced pilot to tame the NK-2.
