The F3N-2 “Maelstrom” is an early carrier based jet fighter, comparable to the F2H Banshee, F9F panther, Sea Hawk, and Sea Venom. The Maelstrom is fitted with four 20mm cannons, and has a top speed of just over 570mph at sea level. With the ability to operate off of short carriers, the Maelstrom was seen as a promising aircraft. Being delivered too late to participate in the fighting over the Korean peninsula, it never had a chance to prove itself against the F2H or F9F, both of which were seen as the better aircraft because of the reputation of their designers. With the chance at fame and fortune lost, the F3N was abandoned with the introduction of air to air missiles and onboard radars. The few airframes delivered were sold for scrap in the late 50’s and early 60’s with none surviving today.
