English version :

After 9 years and 4001 hours spent on SimplePlanes, I present to you an aircraft never reproduced, the Supermarine 543 Blueprint version.

At the end of the 1940s, the RAF, the Royal Navy and the RAE (Royal Aircraft Establishment) studied the possibility of putting into service fighter planes without landing gear. The weight saving would be on average about 7% and these aircraft should theoretically be less expensive to manufacture and maintain. On the other hand, if takeoff from removable trolleys is not a problem, landing is more complex since it requires a shock-absorbing covering. If this type of carpet is removable to allow aircraft with conventional landing gear to land as well, on the other hand those without landing gear cannot land on a hard runway, at the risk of completely breaking up.

By proposing the Supermarine 543 in 1951, the British manufacturer estimated that its project was capable of reaching an altitude of 45,000 feet (13,716 m) in less than three minutes and flying at Mach 1.16 at sea level and Mach 1.53 at high altitude. This single-seater interceptor had a particular configuration with, on each side of the nose, a semi-circular air intake which fed the two Bristol BE.15 engines installed side by side. The nozzles were located at the end of the fuselage, below the swept cruciform tailplane. The wings in the middle position were also swept. At the base of the rudder, an arresting hook was provided to reduce the landing run. The main armament consisted of four 30 mm Aden cannons located in the fuselage. It was also proposed to arm the Type 543 with two Aden cannons and two other recoilless cannons, located in the wing roots, capable of firing a total of 20 air-to-air 50mm projectiles.

With the upcoming development of the Rolls-Royce Avon, Armstrong Siddeley Sapphire Sa.50 Sapphire or Napier E.143 engines, Supermarine hoped that its Type 543 would reach Mach 1.8. Unfortunately for this project, the idea of ??equipping aircraft without landing gear and runways covered with shock-absorbing coating was abandoned by the British military and the Supermarine 543 was abandoned.
