The 9K33 Osa (literally "wasp"; NATO reporting name SA-8 Gecko) is a highly mobile, low-altitude, short-range tactical surface-to-air missile system developed in the Soviet Union in the 1960s and fielded in 1972.
"Osa-AKM" is a further modernization of the complex. This modification can effectively combat aircraft and helicopters while covering troops in all types of combat operations and in conditions of active electronic countermeasures. The affected area in height: from 10 to 5000 m, in range: 1.5 - 10.3 km.
Work on improving the BM SAM "Osa" and its missiles was started in November 1975 under the code name "Mara". The PSI upgraded complex passed in 1977, and state tests were passed in December 1979. In 1980, the SAM was adopted under the designation "Osa-AKM".
