Focke-Wulf "Flitzer"
Focke-Wulf Projekt P.VII "Flitzer"
Historical Background
In march of 1943 Focke-Wulf began a series of projects to explore the possibilities of a single seat, single engine jet fighter. Entwurf 6, aka Projekt VI, was approved for mock up construction. The designation was later changed to Project VII and given the codename "Flitzer" (Madcap/Dasher). This design was two be powered by a single He S 011 turbo jet supplemented by a Walter HWK 509 A-2 rocket motor located underneath the main engine. This rocket motor was intended to aid in the Flitzers bomber interception duties. the rocket motor was eliminated later on in its development and the He S 011 turbojet was to be replaced with another engine such as a BMW 003 or Junkers Jumo 004. Projected armament was two MG 151 20mm cannons in the wings, and two MK 103 30mm cannons in the wings. Although development was pretty far along, the project was cancelled after a full size wooden mock up and various sub assemblies were built. Despite using less resources in its construction Projekt VII was cancelled due to its performance estimates being no better than the Me 262 which was already entering service.
