An unsuccessful contender to Hitler's order for a brand new heavy tank design in 1942, it was beaten by a competing Henschel design which became known as the famous Tiger I tank. It carried the same turret as the successful Tiger I, which was designed by Krupp to mount the new powerful 88mm Kwk 38. It's production was very limited, and the remaining chassis were soon converted to the Elephant tank destroyers.
