OCEAN GATE TITAN.

HISTORY

Titan was a five-man submarine operated by OceanGate, Inc. The 6.7 meter (22 ft) long, 10,432 kg (23,000 lb) vessel was constructed of carbon fiber and titanium.[13] The entire pressure vessel consisted of two titanium hemispheres, two matching titanium interface rings, and a 142 cm (56 in) inner diameter, 2.4 meter (7.9 ft) long carbon fiber wound cylinder. [14] One of the titanium hemispherical end caps was fitted with a 380 mm (15 in.) diameter acrylic window.[15] In 2020, OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush stated that the hull had been downgraded to a depth rating of 3,000 m (9,800 ft) after showing signs of cyclic fatigue. In 2020 and 2021, Titan was rebuilt."[16][17]

Titan made its first dive to Titanic in July 2021.[18] It made additional dives in 2022 and 2023.[19]

Each dive typically had a pilot, three paying passengers, and a guide.[20] Once these people were inside the submarine, the hatches would be locked and could only be reopened from the outside.[21] The descent from the surface to Titanic typically took two hours,[22] with the full dive taking about eight hours.[20] Throughout the trip, the submarine was expected to emit safety pings every 15 minutes to be monitored by the crew on the water.[23] The ship and surface crew could also communicate via text message.[24]

Customers who travel to Titanic with OceanGate, referred to as "mission specialists" by the company,[25] spend US$250,000 to engage in an eight-day expedition."[20][26][27]

OceanGate intended to conduct several expeditions to Titanic in 2023, but due to bad weather in Newfoundland, the company launched only one expedition in 2023."[20][22]

THE INCIDENT

The Titan 2023 submarine incident was the disappearance of the submarine Titan operated by OceanGate in international waters in the North Atlantic Ocean, approximately 400 nautical miles (740 km) off the coast of Newfoundland, Canada on June 18, 2023."[2] The submarine, carrying five people, was part of a tourist expedition to observe the wreckage of the Titanic. Communication with Titan was lost one hour and forty-five minutes after diving to the wreck site. Authorities were alerted when the submarine failed to resurface at the scheduled time that day."[3][4]

After an exhaustive search lasting nearly 80 hours, a remotely operated underwater vehicle (ROV) located debris containing parts of Titan, approximately 488 meters (1,601 feet) from Titanic's bow. This finding was based on the US Navy's sonar detection of the explosion that day, which showed that the inner hull had exploded shortly after Titan began its descent, resulting in the instant death of all passengers on board."[5][6][7]

Prior to the incident, concerns had been raised about the safety of the vessel. However, OceanGate executives had refused to seek certification of Titan, arguing that excessive safety protocols stifled innovation."[8] Search and rescue operations were conducted by an international team led by the United States Coast Guard, United States Navy, and Canadian Coast Guard.[9] Support was provided by aircraft from the Royal Canadian Air Force and Air National Guard, Royal Canadian Navy vessels, as well as several commercial and research vessels and ROVs."[10][11][12]

It's not the controller ,many NUCLEAR armed subs still use those , (no kidding btw)it's just that particular thing was made out of lower grade materials to save costs rather than planned titanium. Also adding the fact it had no way of communication with the world once at depth ,it was not unexpected happening.
